Ok real football guys... What do you think with the talent and guys like Will Ig... And Darrell Taylor and with us not having a true sack master at DE with guys like Kyle Phillips being able to beef up... I think it would do well for us to have a 3-4 single gap scheme.... What do you think?

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

If memory serves me correctly, we were one of the first SEC schools to move away from the 3-4 to the 4-3 ... it's a much better D & it's who we are!

In today's game, 3-4 has really become a 3-3-5 bear front/odd front defense due to the spread offense. Many times, teams that run 3-4 as their base defense just stack the box in a 3-3-5 with an athletic S who can do it all on third down, which allows them to have flexibility, especially on the weak side, during read-option plays/pass plays out of the spread. Bama plays a lot of coverages where DB come up in the box. They also have the flexibility to go 3-3-5 because Foster can do it all. When Williams and Anderson pass rush their fronts are essentially a 4-2-5. 3-3-5 defenses still allow you to show five man fronts, while also keeping five DBs on the field. Problem is, you need solid DT play to run a 3-3-5 properly. Most the time your NT has a 2 gap responsibility. We have zero business playing a 3-4 front. With Kmac and Shy a 3-3-5 would work well against teams that like to run the ball because Kyle and Kong can play 5 tech DE, and we could put Bituli, McD, and Kirk at LBs. Currently, our DT depth has really limited us to basic gap flow assignments/basic DL fronts.

Dont think we have the LBs or at least the LB depth to implement it. I also dont think we've been recruiting for anything but a 4-3 type D

You need Bama like talent and depth at LB to run a 3-4 effectively. We aint even close. You think our defense struggled this year? It could likely be much worse if we ran a 3-4.

A terrible idea. We haven't recruited to fit this scheme.

Also "beefing guys up" to fit a scheme is what leads to injury and player dissatisfaction. They aren't cattle.

Our issue with trying a 3-4 scheme is ILB depth and DT size. I do love the 3-4 scheme and many great defenses have been built on it, however the talent we have is meant for 4-3 with smaller DTs and a star MLB.

Most 4-3 or 4-2-5 teams that make the switch, need 2-3 years of recruiting transition to be even effective. LSU had a backlog of unique tweener athletes and made it look easier under Aranda. Even so, Florida ran it down their throats in that very critical stretch...most likely not to be repeated in ensuing seasons. Georgia struggled for a season and a half, but their DCs had wandering eyes and the kids probably sensed that. I think you need a HC who would fully embrace it and Butch is a 4-3 guy.

People just don't get that a 34 requires more DT types; not less.

Yeah I don't see anyone who could play 0 technique two gap responsibility Nose on this roster. I mean they're trying to play 5's as 3's now. Shoop is a for real 4-3 guy so I see them moving away from the 4-2-5 to a true 4-3 as soon as they recruit enough LB's to play it. When Bama was running that QB sweep with the Vols Nickel trying to set an edge against their pulling linemen it was pretty ugly.

I want to see us in the 4-3, BUTTTTTTT, we really need to develop and recruit more capable LB's. We haven't had good LB overall play in many years. It costs us games!

Having Kongbo, Kyle Phillips and Darrell Taylor type good edge rushing DE guys and total lack of depth at DT and utterly shameful level of performance from OLBs, running 3-4 would be as much of a crime as running a dual threat spread offense with Worley !!
Wait Butch did that !!

At this point, I want whatever alignment they use to be effective. If that means staying in one basic set, or using different fronts under different situations, I don't care. Just dominate.
