With Hall out, Tatum & Niehaus have moved up to 4th & 5th in the OT rotation.

Tatum in particular has turned heads in preseason camp, though. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Florida native still looks more like a big tight end than an offensive tackle at this point, but he’s a lot bigger than he was this time last year, and he’s also a lot bigger than he was when he moved to Knoxville this summer.

“First of all, he’s very athletic, and he’s got great length in his arms,” DeBord said. “And I love the way he competes every day. I love it. And like yesterday in practice, he just said, ‘You know, I don’t understand that.’ He wants to learn, and he wants to master things. I just love his love his attitude, and I love his ability.”

Butch & co has been very good in their OL evaluations

Absolute worst case scenario, we bump Coleman over to RT and have Jack Jones at C. I thought Jones was awesome last year, especially against UGA and Bama.

He was working at center to backup Thomas. With the Hall injury, he's a factor at RT. If he was exclusively at OG? Yeah. But I think his versatility has him elsewhere on the depth chart.

Don't want to saddle him with hasty expectations, but I'm getting a Bruce Matthews feel. That dude could play any position on the line...at Pro Bowl level! Versatility doesn't hurt while he's waiting for a permanent stop.

1) Tatum is closer to 280-285 than he is 265. None in the d-line are moving him out of the way in practice.

2) Jack Jones is the RT back-up. Niehaus is the 5th OT and he is performing well in practice. He weighs about the same as Tatum.

Both freshmen are learning their roles quickly and are very talented. Just have to get bigger and stronger.

Long Arms is a great start. Add in quickness, good feet work, football intelligence and good citizenship off the field and you have a future 1st round pick!

Are you saying they would go to jack Jones at RT before Thomas?

Thanks, glad to do it! But Fingers' practice reports in particular are just fantastic; he puts a lot of work into those & I'm tremendously grateful he does so!
