Tennessee linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen and running backs coach Robert Gillespie both got six figure raises to go along with their new titles. Offensive coordinator Mike DeBord also earned a $75,000 raise to remain the second-highest paid coach on staff.

Thigpen, who is now also considered the Vols' defensive run game coordinator, will now make $505,000 per year in total guaranteed compensation according to his contract obtained Monday night by the News Sentinel. It is a $100,000 raise from his previous salary of $405,000. Gillespie, now also known as the assistant head coach for offense, will make $480,000 per year, a $125,000 raise.

DeBord had his salary raised from $505,000 to $580,000.

CBJ does a great job at rewarding assistants who do a great job. He's also shown that he isn't afraid to shake things up when changes need to be made. I love this staff though

If you want the best you got to open the wallet and give the green generously.

We are in the best shape I've seen in more than a decade Nation and that makes me happier than a billy goat with three pe**ers
Go Vols

I guess they aren't including the head coach when talking about Debord because Shoop makes like twice that.

Would have been nice if they would have waited til AFTER we win the SEC Championship and head to the playoffs, but I'll let it slide.

Well said! I'm glad we have moved on from the past 10-12 year debacle and finally have a quality coaching staff and team. Let's also give credit to the head coach and their recruiting efforts--come a long way in 3 years.

I give Butch Jones credit for assembling this coaching staff, they have become the longest tenured staff in the SEC east in just 3 short years......

Wonder how awkward that was?

He's very fortunate to still be drawing a paycheck from Tennessee IMO. Certsinly could've been awkward, but I'd guess he's just still thanking his lucky stars that Butch didn't cut him loose a few months ago. If I were him however, I think I'd still be making some calls and have the resume updated.

I think Gillespie is doing a great job! Thig gon Thig (LOL).. and debord? (Insert blue font here) Who's that? Ain't he too old to be calling plays? If Shoop is all he is led on to be then it's going to be a special season!

Why so much disparagement thrown at DeBord? We took significant steps forward in offensive points per game, rushing yards and total yards. He did a good job last year IMHO. No reason to think he doesn't do an even better job this year as he gets more comfortable and more familiar with his personnel. He earned that raise with his performance.

Are the Vols handing out raises to Butch Jones and Co like crazy, is it put up or shut up time for the Vol coaches and players?

Some will say yes?

Some will say, not yet?

What do you say?

I think Debord has done a great job as well. I think Butch made a great hire there. I think everyone one was disappointed at first cause it wasn't a young flashy hire. We were in a position to win every game last year.. Hopefully everyone learned from that and this year we see a breakout.. GBO

Debord deserves a raise. He was a great hire by CBJ.

I've liked the DeBord hire from the beginning. I don't get the disparagement either. He is likely the reason we are East favorites this year. Not the only reason, but probably the main reason.

Were mistakes made last year. Of course they were. If you really watched the games though, it was pretty obvious to me that DeBord was good at it. Even early on when he was knocking the rust off.

Remember, we were winning every game we lost and the Defense didn't hold. DeBord, for the most part, did his job. The defensive issue.......all I have to say about that is........Shoop.

2nd half adjustments, we suck at them on both sides of the ball. Look at the # of offensive points scored in the 2nd half compared to the 1st. Is that due to defenses figuring out what we're doing and us not adjusting or Butch playing conservative fearing turnovers more than defensive fatigue?
