I'm thinking with Heupel's offense we'll be in a position similar to Peyton's Colts before their defense got Freeney and a few other key pieces.

Seems to me the defense that best supports a high-scoring offense is one that produces sacks and turnovers, rather than trying to limit time of possession. So look for a DC who is known for exotic blitz packages, or for developing and showcasing edge speed rushers.

The obvious vulnerability then becomes that opponent who features a Big Offensive Line and a Big Back, which can use up most of a quarter on one scoring drive. That puts our defense sucking air in the fourth quarter, and at best, our offense playing for final possession to tie the game.

It's not the way to build a dynasty, but short-term it'll be like a defibrillator for the program. In a few years it'll be good for at least 7 wins a year, with lots of action and fan excitement.

And then one special year we'll finally have that freak athlete, surrounded by the perfect personnel on defense and...

I cast my vote for Arnett but don’t see it happening.Heupul has a connection with Mike Leach and I wouldn’t think he’d steal his DC.Leach(OC) recruited him to Oklahoma but left after one year. His Oline coach was then named coordinator. This was his early lessons of the Air Raid offense.

I don't think Steele will be retained for one simple reason and that being his connection to Fulmer plan and simple. That being said I also believe it is time to find a new direction at UT . We can't keep going down this road of retread after retread and expect to get ahead. If you look around the country there are a lot of smart DC's out there that have strong defense's every year that have no ties to the SEC but plenty of connections around the country and that is where we have to recruit from as we always have except now even more so.

Someone who's smarter than me explain the 3 3 5 and maybe contrast it vs other schemes like the Tampa 2
Zach Arnett explains his defensive philosophy, why he chose Mississippi State over other opportunities
A true 3-3-5 has 3 safeties, 2 of which are overhang defenders usually over slot WRs. Nose is in a 0 tech over center, ends are in a 4 or 5 tech over tackles, LBs lined up behind each DL. Good defense against the pass, not so great against the run usually. Can create confusion in assignments but not many people at point of attack. I prefer a 4-2-5 over a 3-3-5.

Yeah I wouldn’t want anybody that even knows Fulmer. HOF COACH. What a bunch of Bullsh!t!!! Fans are ridiculous. I’m sure if Peyton Manning wanted to be QB coach , he wouldn’t be allowed on the field. I think he has some history with Fulmer. What about David Cutcliffe, no , wait a minute, he knows Fulmer to. Damn !

I bet there are more than three good DCs out there. Muschamp, Odom, Reeves, Lake, and so on.
