I know this has probably been asked a millions times, but why do our dbs play so far off the wr. Especially inside the 10. Our db was in the endzone about 7 or 8 yards off the ball. The wr runs a 5 yard route and scores. Our db tackles him after the wr is in the endzone.

I'm no expert, but they were killing us all night with the quick throws and I know our DBs were playing off to prevent the big play. They destroyed us with their RB and TE passes. I am pretty sure their WRs were running deep routes (that we had to respect) and you play far off of the WR when you're defending a deep route.

but when you are inside the 10 yard line, where's the deep route.?

If it's 1st and goal, who cares if it ends at the 1 inch line. It's either TD or FG (or blocked FG) so you play at the end zone to "keep them from getting past you". It's the same Defense, in theory, to the Prevent. They're trying to keep everything in front of them.

in the past, Tennessee teams have had corners who were athletic and instinctive enough to play 5-8 yards off the reciever and then come up and either make an interception or make a big hit... right now we just have young guys at corner who were sort of thrown in there suddenly so they have the athletic ability but once they are in the system for another year or 2 you will see a lot of plays made at corner if teams continue to try and do that

Vinson really does have the ability to be a nasty CB. He has the size, speed and instincts of a WR. Put that at CB with an affinity for hitting, and you have a potential All-American. He has played admirably this season, considering he was a converted WR... and wasn't even listed at CB when the season began.

We play so far off the ball for three reasons:

1. We are afraid of our young secondary getting beat on a big play and would rather have the offense try to make several catches in front of them instead of risking them making one catch behind them.

2. We don't think our D-Line can get consistent pressure and force quick throws, exacerbating problem #1.

3. It is pretty much the Chavis style.

I don't like it, and I certainly don't like it in a lot of situations we use it, but reasons 1 & 2 are legitimate concerns.

yea i havent been able to judge Vinson's instincts but i know Berry has them and if we get Morley back and Johnson improves and Vinson does have those instincts then we will have a nasty secondary next year

Fade route to the pylon.
Then you play outside technique, then the strong saftey or o-backer jumps the hot route, or hard slant if that is your concern...........whoohoo, I declare that know more than Coach Slade :dance2: lol
