David Stern retiring

That should be exactly 30 years, give or take a day or so, since he took over that mess.

Congrats to the guy who somehow got people to completely forget the greatest scandal in sports history with Tim Donoughy. That, my friend, takes a great genius to pull that off.

The greatest potential scandal, you mean. Stern buried that story like an absolute master. Red Sox pitchers eating fried chicken ended up being a bigger actual scandal.

Good point.

It's incredible how he pulled that off. If you actually read what Tim D actually was giving bookies, it's freaking scary what was going on. Just scary.

Stern is a god.

Must read. An evisceration. A semi-admiring one, even, in a way. But an evisceration.

David Stern's final act as NBA commissioner: Promote the myth of David Stern - Yahoo! Sports

So here comes the emperor now, sleeping well in the understanding that the future of the NBA is secure because Adam Silver promises to make sure anything Stern doesn't want revealed about these past three decades of totalitarian rule comes out with a steep price and punishment to pay. From the beach and someday the grave, Stern will have this league rigged for his legacy forever and ever. The fear and loathing of David Stern will never end, and perhaps that's what he's always wanted.

At least Stern is smart. He's a manipulating *******, but he's at least smart.

Roger Goodell is a dumbass.

I have a hard time blaming Stern for most of the stuff he does because he is just acting in his own interest like most would in his position. My beef is that the NBA was more fun to watch 20 years ago than it is today. I think part of that is they took a lot of the toughness out of basketball because they were so scared of the urban thug image.

Only one commish can do what he has done: Four work stoppages in twenty years. That's incredible. I just was starting to get into hockey and was excited about this year. This lockout totally turned me off. I doubt I'll watch now except for a Red Wing game every once in a while.

Long live Gary Bettman.

Every year, Gary Bettman walks out to center ice to award the Stanley Cup, and every year, the fans who just finished watching the greatest playoffs in sports interrupt their celebrating for a minute to boo his ass mercilessly. A good percentage of hockey fans legitimately think that he's a deliberate plant by David Stern to ruin a competing sport. He's the worst.

In other words, Bettman is the perfect modern commissioner -- a complete stooge, thoroughly the tool of the owners. He admitted that he didn't even know anything about hockey when he took the job. He's there to be the cardboard cutout that the fans hate.

I'm not naive enough to believe he is some sort of important figure in the NHL. But it's incredible how he still has a job.

It's kind of crazy to think that Bud Selig went from being the worst commish to being the best currently........and he still hasn't installed INSTANT REPLAY!

Doesn't he work for them?

I would argue that Goodell is amazing at his job, when most think he sucks...yeah the replacement referees were a joke, but league $ did not suffer, and the blame never fell on his bosses (the owners). He took all the heat from fans. From the owner's perspective Goodell is the best.

Goodell has nothing to do with the money. He's just there for the ride.

Nobody has been more hypocritical about anything with his stance on "safety". It's a joke.
