I don’t think we should be unranked but on the wins I’m afraid he has a bit of a point. Where is Tennessee’s quality win? They definitely have 3 quality losses.

Heupel had plenty of chances to change the narrative this year. Wins over Arkansas, Mississippi State in overtime and Kentucky in Lexington are dwarfed by boneheaded plays in the Georgia game, rank incompetence in Tuscaloosa digging a hole that couldn't be overcome and the absence of a substantive defense in the Oklahoma game (plus another boneheaded call at 4th and less than 1).

What Heupel and this staff can do will be fully on display the last two weeks of the season, Tennessee is not a playoff team this year, despite the fact that they are quite talented at many skill positions, this coaching staff and the schemes they throw out there are generally not effective against the better coached teams in the conference.

Currently, Heupel's downward trajectory mirrors the three year decline he engineered at Central Florida, where his first year was his best year, hope he can change that here, but 2022 is a distant memory and any return to the competitive level with the top teams in the conference will require a significant upgrade with coordinators and many position coaches.

The “quality wins” point is a bit deceptive. Because there are only so many losses in the Top 25 teams to be spread around. The top 10 only have 10 losses combined. Seven of those losses came to other Top 10 teams. One was to a team outside the Top 25 (ASU>TTU).

At quick glance, I only found 4 wins in teams 12-25 that are against current Top 25 teams. We are not alone. And ironically for Portnoy, Michigan isn’t one of those teams.

Unfortunately, I think we are gonna come full circle with a 7-5 record in year 5. This team is soft, undisciplined, and has bad luck on top of it all.

Yep. Frankly had never heard of him and now I know why. While ABC/ESPN was down last weekend, I tried to watch some of the Fox show. Portnoy and his crew were pitiful. Unwatchable.
