Dave Hart, the Gift that keeps on Giving

The big question is whether Grier will once again be "on the juice" when we play his team.

These match-ups provide the program with the opportunity to showcase itself nationally. Contrary to the opinion of some, Tennessee will never be able to stock itself with in-state talent only. We need to play these games and look really good doing it. Nobody dislikes Hart more than I, but we have to include these games. My only reservation would be maybe avoiding the Big 12. Kansas State, Oklahoma, formerly Nebraska, we just don't get the job done against their talent.

WVa is Big 12

I don't get this, OP.

You're blaming Dave Hart for the Tennessee Volunteers scheduling a compelling football game against a good team from outside our conference. Right?

Don't we want to play compelling football games against good teams from outside our conference? There are several aspects to that desire:

(1) "To be the best, you have to beat the best." I'm not saying West Virginia is the best in college football, but then again, we're not (yet) saying Tennessee is, either. The principle still works: if we're going to gain national recognition as one of the powers of college football, we have to prove we are worthy of that recognition by taking on challenges. Not shying away from them.

(2) Peer competition is more entertaining. Can't count the number of comments on these boards each year bemoaning games against Northeast South Central State or Central Wyoming Technical A&M. We want games that matter, games where the advantages of one program are not overwhelming in comparison to the other. WVa-Tenn is balanced and competitive in that way.

(3) Cross-conference contests are illuminating. How do we know whether the B12 or SEC is the better conference? The PAC or ACC? Well, there's only one way: have a lot of games between teams from different conferences, and see which one comes out on top. Vols-Mountaineers contributes to that clarity.

So yeah, I don't really get the original post. Not at all. The title of the thread shows a vindictiveness against a former AD that surely has its roots somewhere beyond the scheduling of a game against WVa. In other words, you have baggage. Then, you apply that baggage in a way that doesn't seem to make much sense, to an "issue" that doesn't seem much of an issue at all on reflection.

So yeah, I don't get it, OP. Don't, at all.

If it were up to me, we would face power 5 teams only on the OOC schedule. Last season's case in point; UMass. Or under Dooley, Troy. And in Fulmer's final season, Wyoming. No real honor in beating those guys, but the criticism of losing to them kills momentum but isn't much worse than barely beating them.

Play a hard schedule throughout, and you aren't justifying reducing your stadium's seating capacity.

They'll best Pruitt's defense right out of the gate, that's for sure.

would it be a shocker really, to see a really good offensive team like WVU, best a team that is in it's first year, under a new coach and scheme, that isn't where anyone wants it to be personnel wise?

OR... more importantly, do you think that's really going to be a leading indicator of how things are always going to be?

As if to say "this is pruitt's defense" like it's going to be a referendum on pruitt as a whole, or what we should expect going forward, w/out any changes in the future, personnel wise, schematically?????

not sure what to take from that comment.

'pruitt's defense' also won 2 national championships.

and apparently it's also going to get the floor wiped with it by WVU........:dunno:

Youre correct, but in this keyboard QB world, for every action there appears to be an equal and opposite over reaction.
Just like when we lose 9 of 12 scholarship O Lineman to injury and then growl about the lack of a ground game or why there werent more passes downfield..

Anyone, anywhere, anytime. We're not Florida.

I understand you hate Florida but by virtue of playing FSU yearly in addition to the SEC schedule, Florida has NOTHING to apologize for.

In fact, no SEC team has anything to apologize for when it comes to scheduling.

While you are at it, why not put in for a screen name change to Noballs? If I was going to get that whiny about it, I would give up and become a fan of, "Days of our Lives".

If you're afraid to play West Virginia get off VolNation.

Not saying we're winning this ball game in the fall.

But my lord, we are Tennessee dammit.

Obviously, you forgot about Vanderbilt. Seeing them schedule a tough OOC schedule is like a bigfoot sighting in Hawaii.

i don't think he was advocating for NOT playing WVU. nor am i.

i think it's a good thing. and i'm glad we annually play p5 conf teams in the OOC schedule.

Running away from tough OOC games is what teams like Vanderbilt have traditionally done to try to become bowl eligible. That is a loser mentality.

I really cannot believe some of you nega vols on this thread! I would hate to go to a party with you guys. Talking about negativity, just read above!

Yes we had the worst record in the SEC last year, yes the team gave up on Jones, yes we have a first year coach with a completely new system, and yes we are still recruiting players to fit Pruitt's system but come on!!

This is a team that is being built in the mold of "old school smash mouth football". We have a coaching staff that has an excellent track record, we have players that are finally being pushed to reach their full potential, we have a plan that has been CHAMPIONSHIP proven, and we have arguably the best facilities and fan bases in this country.

I don't know if we will win or not but what I do know is this team will be well coached, physically ready, and mentally prepared to put a hurting on other teams. Let's just take a deep breath and let them play before preaching all this gloom and doom.
