“The Battle For The Barrel”

Danny White is already a legend for restoring so many traditions in Knoxville, if anyone can bring the beer barrel back, it’s our Athletic Director.

Didn’t the tradition end around the same time as the VOLS sign coming down?

Agreed, bring back the Beer Barrel! Bring it back, place the missing scores on it, and let it resume its role as the trophy for our rivalry.

Any argument the anti-barrelists had about an inappropriate trophy celebrating alcohol went out the window when (1) Kentucky started selling alcoholic drinks to their wealthy donors in box seats at Commonwealth, and (2) when Tennessee started selling alcoholic drinks in Neyland. Sidelining the barrel for one year after that tragic accident would have been fine, but to ban it forever? NO-SIR-EE. Let the beer (barrel) be free!

Don't even have to call in the Beer barrel. I mean we all know what it is but just call it the Battle of the Barrel.

Last seen in Brian Niedermeyer's office, wasn't it?

Probably in some pawn shop in Arkansas now.

And btw, the University of Kentucky will never (ever) allow this barrel to come back to the rivalry. The reason they'll give is those college kids who died in a DUI tragedy the year we got rid of it. The underlying, perhaps more calculated reason, is that no one is ever in favor of bringing back a trophy where the other team's score is almost always bigger than yours. Better to start new, if you're the losing side.

I thought we had it on permanent display since we pretty much owned it until recently.

But yes - agreed to bring it back. Why would we get rid of something with that much tradition?

Honestly, I always thought a whiskey barrel made more sense than a beer barrel, given the expertise both states have for distilling alcohol.

But that would fail the political correctness test just as badly as beer.

So I don't know what could replace it. Something about horses (walking horses vs quarter horses)? Or music (bluegrass vs country)? IDK. If it were easy, it would probably already be a done deal.

Go Vols!

They need to give Kentucky a call. And if they want to be twits about it? We could swap them out to the ACC for Florida State or Clemson.

Yep, there was a tragedy that surrounded it, so they stopped it
