Not only was it a caveman sport in how it was played on the court but it was really immature as a business too. The NBA is far less mature, even still today, as a business than other leagues like the NFL or MLB. You can see it in things like the growth rates in ratings/TV contracts and growth rates in valuations of the teams - it's faster growth because it still isn't as mature as those leagues.
If memory serves, as recently as the mid 1980s some NBA playoff games were broadcast on tape delay. That's like the AFC Championship game or NLCS being broadcast on a tape delay in 1985...it's hard to believe. The NBA as a business still has more room to grow and mature relative to the other major leagues...it didn't really become a "thing" a national audience paid attention to until the 80s. The Lakers/Celtics, Bird/Magic rivalry built the game in a lot of ways, then Jordan exploded it.
