In KNS today, there is an article about DJ Swearinger, who decommitted. He says his "only correspondence with the vols came shortly after Fulmer's ouster when Dan Brooks told Swearinger to 'do whatever [he] need[ed] to do'".

Am I reading too much into it to see that a possible interpretation is that "do what you need to do, I dont care" is a possibility? Or was Brooks misquoted or was it more like "We love you at TN and we want you to come, but we respect that you need to do some things...do what you need to do".

Also, aside from that, only ONE contact with recruits? That IS troubling.

There is a rumor that came up this spring that indicated that the reason last year's recruiting class was so sucky is that the staff was more focused on saving their hides than on recruiting...

This is to be expected. A lame duck staff isn't going to pour heart and soul into recruiting, and worse yet, might even be openly apathetic to the current recruits out of spite.

Since we went to the SECCG that makes no sense.

Do you not remember the huge hole we started in? There was also the whole "getting run out of the stadium by our two biggest rivals" thing. Just because last year's team wandered their way into the SECCG doesn't mean that the coaches were sitting pretty all year.

Which coach (that should have been showed the door last week after it was reported) told that RB from Tampa to look at other options?

that's what happens most of the time when coaches are let go. reason being most of the time recruits come to play for the coach, not the school.

Then their offices should be immediately cleared out with their belongings thrown all over Lake Loudon Blvd. Your paid to work regardless if you're a lame duck.

My post above yours. :hi:

Basilio's totally blasting these coaches right now. He says any salesman that pulled this crap in corporate America would get termiated then sued.

This, imo, is a bigger story than any loss or coaching search, at this point at least.

No I totally forgot.

How do you not recruit and spend time you would use recruiting trying to save your job? What does that entail?

If someone says they spent more time scheming, looking at film etc than recruiting I can accept that.

Agreed.

To go along with the corporate comment...
A friend of mine pointed out that Fulmer himself was in a sense a brand at UT. Fulmer developed the brand name through success and has been selling it as the university's commitment to him that would be extended to the players.

Branding is about being part of the collective. I think Fulmer may have been the best at that recruiting style because he had the history to make the brand work.

You can't sell mach III (is it?) razors without Woods, Federer and Gretsky. Alex rodriguez? maybe

Sorry, Fulmer isn't bigger than this program and never will be, no pun intended.

If Fulmer cares as much about the school and the program as he says he does, lame duck or not shouldn't he be out there contacting these kids and trying to get them to stick with UT?

Exactly. If a coach chooses not to do his job while under contract, simply remove him from the complex and tell him to call an attorney if he wants to attempt to receive the rest of his compensation.

Should this be a bigger controversy than it is? Its been reported by more than one newspaper that a couple of recruits, who live hundreds of miles apart, were both told to not come here by two coaches currently receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from the athletic department.

If this story is true, this is exactly what Fulmer should do and if he doesn't, Hamilton should drag Brooks out kicking and screaming w/o a press conference.

I hope Scott and Drayton stay on.

They have been great at recruiting so far.
Clean house. We can find recruiters anywhere and Drayton hasn't showed much coaching wise IMO. And Scott??? Our receivers can't run routes and can't catch anything. I want our coaches to be able to .... well, coach.

all i'll say is this, you lose credibility as a "recruiter" if you're not all-in for the kids.

That could mean, that Brooks and the like are setting themselves up for another job, and it could mean that they're trying to be sincere with the kids.

Either way, we fired our coach - we can expect some recruits to bail out.

If the recruits don't have UT in their hearts i'm glad they're going elsewhere.

If the guy that recruited me to UT told me to go elsewhere, I'd listen. That has nothing to do with what's in my heart. These guys should be fired. When they get consideration for their next jobs, Mike Hamilton needs to make a call and advise against hiring them.

Agreed....And I would hope that anyone that considered hiring these two mopes would take into consideration there lack of job commitment. These two still have jobs. I haven't it seen it announced that they will be let go. Do your job or get out....
