Bruce Pearl understands the importance of basketball history and tradition. During his tenure in Knoxville, Pearl has done a remarkable job of reuniting former great players with the program -- something that had been severely lacking before his arrival. On Wednesday, that trend continued as two-time All-American Dale Ellis stepped to the podium to address...

Pearl has most definitely done a good job of getting the past greats back to Knoxville. Good read.

First John Ward call I remember "Ellis stops, pops and drops."

Wish I could have seen him play.

Only good things I hear from my old man and uncles.

Wish we could view this as it happened on UTSports.com. Great to see Dale again. What a touch on the ball he had. He gives Devoe props...but I remember most of us at the timewondering what Dale might have been at a faster pace w/ a different coach. Devoe pissed me off at least weekly for a zillion reasons.

what, no props for Michael Brooks? Tyrone Beamon? Dan Federman? Willie Burton? When Dale Ellis ("the slender junior from Marietta, Georgia") and these guys were playing, that's when I first started listending to Vols bball . I wish I had a dollar for every shot I made with my Nerf Hoop, listening to those guys play. Actually, I see no evidence that any of these Pearl teams are any better. Those guys went to a sweet 16 as well, losing to Marquette as I recall? Is that right? Those guys were dangerous from 3 pt. range..especially Ellis.

The three didn't exist and Ellis spent his time in the post.

Well, I was pretty young..not sure why I am remembering it that way. Michael Brooks was pretty dangerous from long range, however. As was I with my Nerf Hoop. And Ellis did in fact nail a lot of longer shots form the corner. Incidentally, I said,"3 pt. range", not the , 3 pt. shot. Oh and thanks BigPapaVol. You're a real sweetheart, as always.

Ellis was a very good long range shooter while at TN. He did spend most of his time in the post, but when he stepped out he was equally as much of a threat to our opponents.

We all have many favorite sayings from John Ward in football, but I always loved some of the basketball quotes he had as well.

"You walked, sir."

"Guuuuuuns....bang!"

"Nothing but net"

"Nothing buy nylon"

"Tickles the twine"

"Pops...drops"

and of course the signature...

"Bottom!!"

I should've said a shining star on his team. Before he got there and after he left it was dismal. In my opinion.

Yes, don't sell the Dale Ellis era short. It was one of the more successful periods we've had.

Come on bro. Before him was Ernie & Bernie with Reggie Johnson as a transition.

You're right. Tennessee basketball has always been contending for national ranking and exposure. What was I thinking.
