Cut to Duke?

Most all of the Cutcliffe speculation has been posted in the Cut/GaTech thread simply for purposes of not having a gazillion Cutcliffe threads as his name is mentioned in connection with various jobs. Maybe there should be one aptly titled thread to merge all this discussion into.

As for the Duke rumour, I know that Bobby Johnson and Karl Dorrell have actually interviewed at Duke as did Paul Johnson before accepting the GaTech job. Interestingly, there are some Vandy fans who hope Duke takes Johnson so they can make a run at Cutcliffe. Any way you slice it, I think Cutcliffe will either be a head coach somewhere in 2008 or he is about to get a big fat raise. It'd be interesting to see how certain coaches react if Cut gets a much larger salary increase than them.

well crap, i just posted a thread in the sports forum about BJ at Duke.....with KD. can't see Cut leaving for that job, and honestly, i can't see any reason BJ would leave vandy, o/t throwing a truckload of money at him, for this job either.

jake, given the history of Vandy's coaches, Johnson has maybe two years to get to a bowl game. next year they will have a lot of fresh faces, and most folks assume it will be a rebuilding year for the Dores. That means 2009 would be a one-season do-or-die situation. If Johnson takes the Duke job (assuming it is offered) the conventional wisdom says he gets 5 years minimum no matter how bad the record is.

Given the vacancies, if one of our assistants doesn't land a HC job now, they never will. What does that say about the national perception of our staff?

I can definatley see why he would want to go to duke or vandy. At least for Duke there is no where to go but up. winning 2 or 3 games would be considered a vast improvement there.

Couldn't you make that statement about any SEC team who doesn't lose an assistant?

And if Bobby Johnson and/or Randy Sanders get new jobs, does that tell us about the national perception of the UK and Vandy staffs?

There are a couple of assistants in the SEC who are everyone's darling right now, having actually turned down offers elsewhere (officially and unofficially) because they realize that they are within a step of being offered the head caoch slot at a BCS school that can really contend. I'd cite Jimbo Fisher and Will Muschamp as the two prime examples.

i think most would agree that Cut is the one that stands the most to gain on our staff as far as future jobs are concerned. but most schools only have 1 guy that stands out.....

yes. but i would conted the following: Jimbo Fisher left LSU for FSU, and has now been named successor to Bowden, Pellini from LSU is HC at Nebraska.

looking elsewhere in the league......Al Borges and Will Muschamp at Auburn have both had HC rumors float around about them. Ga's Martinez has had the future hc tag put on him, same for Strong at FL and Nix at SC.

so i'd say we're about on par with the rest of the league, albeit in a strange way.

How many of those guys that you mentioned are 15 years younger than Cut or Chavis? I think that has a lot to do with the lack of head coaching rumors.

Why in the world would Cut leave Tennessee for Duke? Come on now..

Heard on the radio yesterday that Duke is willing to pay around 1.5-2.0 million a year for a coach...They want BJ bad, and I think he hops ship....Easier to win in the ACC than it is in the SEC (especially with Vandy) who knows maybe Cut goes to Vandy....As long as he goes somewhere and takes that boring playbook with him..

Even Major Applewhite is already getting mention.

yeah, and the only reason i didn't mention him, is that his name hasn't been brought up with any particular school as the others have, plus his age. i can't see a mid tier to major BCS conf. team offering a HC job to a 20 something yet.

but he'll get an opp, of that i have no doubt.

Spurrier did OK there. A sharp minded young coach will bite off any opportunity to show his stuff.
