Currie's decision to keep information secret about this hire will ultimately doom him. Had he allowed some leaked information as trial balloons, he would have felt the outrage of hiring Schiano before signing the MOU. He could also have dispelled the Grumors. He could have insulated himself from criticism that he wasn't pursuing obviously more qualified candidates than Schiano.
Going into this search, I thought Currie's strategy made sense. By keeping information tightly controlled, it would minimize the embarrassment of being publicly rejected by coaches and make it seem like he was in good shape with the hire. I think the information leaks have been minimal. Unfortunately for Currie, I believe the media just made up a lot of things (er um, were told by their sources). So, ultimately, the search still turned into a circus, and had the fatal flaw of not allowing the public to assess his decision before he signed what might be a legally binding MOU (I'm not a lawyer, don't hold me to that). This search will probably be a case study for ADs in the coming years.
