Currie's decision to keep information secret about this hire will ultimately doom him. Had he allowed some leaked information as trial balloons, he would have felt the outrage of hiring Schiano before signing the MOU. He could also have dispelled the Grumors. He could have insulated himself from criticism that he wasn't pursuing obviously more qualified candidates than Schiano.

Going into this search, I thought Currie's strategy made sense. By keeping information tightly controlled, it would minimize the embarrassment of being publicly rejected by coaches and make it seem like he was in good shape with the hire. I think the information leaks have been minimal. Unfortunately for Currie, I believe the media just made up a lot of things (er um, were told by their sources). So, ultimately, the search still turned into a circus, and had the fatal flaw of not allowing the public to assess his decision before he signed what might be a legally binding MOU (I'm not a lawyer, don't hold me to that). This search will probably be a case study for ADs in the coming years.

Wtf was he supposed to do..... tell the whole world who he was trying to hire?

Currie's secrecy had nothing to do with it.... it was his underestimating the blow back from hiring someone present during the Penn State Sandusky era.

As crazy as it sounds, Currie would've been more knowledgeable if he had been reading VolNation. I know there are a lot of dumb comments on message boards like this, but the overwhelming negative response to Schiano from across almost the entire Vol fanbase was pretty obvious. We've had a lot of strong debate on coaches, but none have received as near universal condemnation as Schiano.

i agree. Not coming out and saying that Gruden was not coming was his first mistake. Also it coming out the day after losing to Vandy at home and the worst seson ever ending didnt help either. Just poorly handled from beginning to end. Shiano should have never been in consideration

I agree 100%. Few of us agreed on who we wanted but we were united on who we didn't. I laughed when I first heard Schiano's name because I honestly thought it was a troll job.

i would have definitely been scanning the boards just to get a feel of the fan base. You know they found out today though who really pays the bills. The rich guys pay for the facilities but its the fans that buy the tickets and the support merchandise and thats where the real money comes from. we are the customers and if we dont buy your product who will.

You are right. There are people on this board who have been Vol fans for 30, 40 and 50+ years. People with passion that truly bleed orange. People who help to preserve the pride and traditions that have made Tennessee an all time great program. Most of us have forgotten more about Tennessee football then Currie could ever learn.

Bottom line, Currie is not to sharp.
Just another BSing snake oil selling YES man.
As with BJ, his arrogance will be his demise.

Hopefully, Currie will be fired today.

I'm completely disgusted with the misguided athletics department. Currie was one of the guys involved with firing Fulmer during the 2008 season and comers back and offers Schiano..... he's a huge part of the problem..... he's Haslam's ass puppet

Haslam and Peterson are the two who told Hamilton to fire Fulmer in 2008. They had already handcuffed Fulmer to some extent by limiting the $$$ he could spend on OC, DC, and other assistant coaches... so Fulmer hired who his funds could buy after Cutliffe left. Yeah, the Haslams give a lot of $$$ to the school, but at the same time they are a cancer to it by demanding their way in too many things... such as the football program.
