As most people have figured out, Currie's attempted hire of Schiano was made possible by the Gruden "smokescreen" that was meticulously planned. The Grumors provided distractions and even some of the AD didn't know Currie was pursuing Schiano and attempting to make the hire.

It could be possible that this is another planned "smokescreen" by Currie & company to distract the fanbase while they try to sneak another hire behind the fans back. Just a thought I had considering the eerie similarities between the two situations:

Major media outlets reporting the offer.
Fake flights to locations.
Rumors of offer amount.
Rumors of in-person meeting in a tertiary location.

Thoughts? Maybe my skepticism is too high after the first attempt.

EDIT: some proof

"Multiple sources close to the situation indicated Currie’s fate is delicately hanging in the balance, and they also noted Chancellor Beverly Davenport’s chummy relationship with the Vols’ athletic director. Currie and Davenport, per sources on campus, had hands in both Tennessee’s decision last week to publicize false flight paths for a university jet and also Davenport’s decision to favorite a tweet regarding Jon Gruden while Currie, who met with Gruden and had discussions with him on the Vols’ job, also never shot down Gruden talk."

I honestly don’t think Gruden was realistically in play

I do believe Gundy is though

In hindsight, I don't believe Gruden was a realistic candidate. But reports of him being offered as a procedural move came out, and a recent report included that Currie had faux plane logs in order to distract people.

Only an idiot would try to do that again, so it's entirely possible you are correct. However, I don't think this is a smoke screen, if it was I think we would have gotten a no pretty directly today.

Currie is a bad Athletic Director, but he's smart enough to know that he'd be fired before the week is out if he tried to pull off a second backchannel coaching search.

There is a good chance he has already torpedoed his chances at UT, and he is working now to salvage his career for when he is asked to resign.

They would have to call in the national guard if he intentionally smoke screened us again and hired some effing loser dirtbag coach.

what possible good comes from pushing a gruden narrative to bring us schiano? and then, double down, on a gundy smoke screen to bring us...........................

the conspiracy theories have to stop. and the grumors were fan created, fan pushed, and fan followed. i would give it zero chance that currie and UTAD pushed gruden to the hill so they could sneak around and vet Schiano.

that's just dumb. so no, most people haven't "figured that out" you just haven't figured out that grumors was something you created and gave it life and it's own manifest destiny. and this is just an attempt to remove yourself from the blame.

Why would any smokescreen be needed? What would the AD want to hide?

Are we the only fanbase whch believe intricate misdirection is necessary to simply hire a head coach?

I doubt it. What scares me more is Gundy using us to get a big OSU raise and make us look even more stupid than we already do.

Should've gone for the more sure thing--Lane or Tee.

Gruden smokescreen is mostly why the fan base went berserk...

I truly doubt another BS attempt is underway...

I'm thinking maybe a slam dunk hire like Skip Holtz at La. Tech might be what we need. Inexpensive with a great football pedigree. And you know he would sign on the dotted line.

No one is going to torpedo Gundy or Kiffin and probably not Petrino - though I would be pretty irritated if he was next.

Currie not being fired and Blackburn already on the job is a very bad sign.

UT fans need to stay united and working hard to get our demands met ASAP!

OUT with Davenport.

OUT with Currie.

OUT with the Haslams and their power hungry group.

If the rumor is correct that we're going to spend $8 Million on a new HC then get a GREAT new HC and do NOT settle for a Kiffin or some other unproven loser.

Go after Pedersen or at least a top Coordinator that's WON a National Championship or been close to it.

Get the Haslams and the control politics OUT of our AD and let our coaches build and run their programs the right ways.

Stay united and working together to get OUR Tennessee sports programs back on the tracks to at least top 10 consistently and building to WIN Championships!

VFL...GBO!!!

making it appear that we tried to hire him, and creating and pusing the narrative are two different things.

the UTAD didn't create them. they didn't push them. they tried to make it look like they tried, and they did.

and the only reason they did that was because it already existed and they needed to placate some portion of the fan base. and the click bait sites were feeding this fan base like pets at a petting zoo.

Currie isn't smart enough to pull off a smokescreen. As if a smokescreen would work.
