Pitt vs. Tennessee
Saturday, September 10 – 3:30 PM
- The Panthers welcome the Tennessee Volunteers for the second Johnny Majors Classic, a celebration of the legendary coach who will forever connect these two programs. Fans attending the game can expect to see a list of prominent Pitt greats who played for Majors in his two stints as the program's head coach, while the Majors family will also be honored as Pitt and Tennessee come together to recognize the historic football figure who made history at both schools during his impactful playing and coaching career.
someone posted a few weeks ago about what teams we'd like to play OOC more requently, and I went to UCLA, ND, etc, but think there's some ACC ties that also make sense on a rotational basis...maybe 6 year rotation (Home/away)...Johnny Major Classic has cool interest from both sides. Virginia Tech is a good geographic proximity matchup w/ passionate fan bases (though Bristol prob won't happen any more. And, then Ga Tech is an old school rival, certainly in the hotbed of our top 1-2 recruiting grounds.Pitt vs. Tennessee

UCLA & ND for sure. tOSU, Mich, PN ST nice draws. NC & Clem good for recruiting. USC could help with Cali recruiting. FSU & Miami nice also. Let’s not be afraid to go anywhere & open up a can of whoop a$$ on the best programs in the country.someone posted a few weeks ago about what teams we'd like to play OOC more requently, and I went to UCLA, ND, etc, but think there's some ACC ties that also make sense on a rotational basis...maybe 6 year rotation (Home/away)...Johnny Major Classic has cool interest from both sides. What was criminal was UT hiring Bill Battle over Johnny in 1970. Woodruff should have been fired on the spot for that fiasco. They love Johnny up there and why not, in 5 years he turned Pitt from a perennial 1 or 2 win team into national champs. He rebuilt UT despite having an AD (Woodruff who wouldn't give him any support until after the shift in power to Majors due to the Sugar Bowl win over Miami). and not being able to give 200 scholarships over 2 years like he did at Pitt. He should always be acknowledged and praised whenever those two teams play. I spent a lot of great, and some horribly disappointing, games watching Majors coach the Vols. It was a lot more fun than the last 20 have been.
I remember going to the first BB game after that Sugar Bowl. Johnny often went to the games and when he came in to sit in his seats in the old Stokley arena, the entire crowd gave him a standing ovation.. I've told the story of his downfall before, but it doesn't change the fact that he probably loved the Volunteers more than any man I ever knew.
