I agree with OP. Bama does it and has done it for many many years usually.

  • 2008: Win 34-10 vs. No. 9 Clemson
  • 2009: Win 34-24 vs. No. 7 Virginia Tech*
  • 2010: Win 48-3 vs. San Jose State (Penn State was the second game)
  • 2011: Win 48-7 vs. Kent State (Penn State was the second game)
  • 2012: Win 41-14 vs. No. 8 Michigan
  • 2013: Win 35-10 vs. Virginia Tech
  • 2014: Win 33-23 vs. West Virginia
  • 2015: Win 35-17 vs. No. 20 Wisconsin*
  • 2016: Win 52-6 vs. No. 20 USC
  • 2017: Win 24-7 vs No. 3 Florida State
  • 2018 Win 51-14 vs Lousiville

No they don't. Under Saban, Alabama has opened with Clemson 2008, Virginia Tech 2009, Michigan 2012, Wisconsin 2015, USC 2016, Florida State 2017, and Louisville 2018. Now granted, you can make the argument that they are cupcakes compared to Alabama, but you can make that argument about every team in the country. Point is those aren't the teams you schedule if you're looking for an easy opener.

When installing new systems yes, but not when your program is rolling. Players are driven in the off-season by a big opening game. A game one loss against a ranked opponent is not a season killer, especially when the game is close.

It didn’t work for Mulligan. He’s the 1st Florida coach to lose to KY since the 80’s. I wonder how the fans of DTU are doing.

It’s hard to get better beating a cupcake. Sure we can nit pick the film to make improvements but the game speed is not the same as a SEC play.

We will agree to disagree here. Your points are valid, but I still believe that with a new coach, lots of new players, and a new system, playing an "easy" opponent (App state, anyone?), can give valuable feedback.

App State isn't an easy opener for anybody. Ask Penn State. Ask Michigan

Cupcake games are good to get the final rust off and get the young guys some early playing time before the grind of the season. I don't put too much stock as an indication on how good the team will be but it helps getting them ready for the rest of the season and more coaching opportunities.
JMO of course.
