I've never seen so many grown men cry like a bunch of little babies. I watched the game on cumberland last night going from party to party and everyone else had exciting points.

so what, we lost the game. cal wanted the game BAD. the only things that game them the win were the fumble return which is gonna happen at a home game anyway. and desean jackson. we don't have a desean jackson. and when i say we don't have a desean jackson i don't mean what he just does when he has the ball, i mean how he spreads the defense out.

their offense has so many weapons and despite our d line playing poorly, our defense was getting it together in the second half.

as for the coaching, there was some calls that didn't make sense to me. i wanted to see o'neal out there earlier.

our running looks sharp. and coker wasn't even there. foster looks really good.

ainge was playing like a vet and is our offensive leader. i'm excited to have him behind center.

our receivers started playing better towards the end of the game.

our team started to play as a team towards the end of the game. yes it sucks that we lost and it does piss me off to. i hate losing. but there's so many things to be happy about. i'm excited about this season i think we're going to do well. cal wanted the game more than we did and they had a whole year to think about revenge. they didn't even really get revenge like they wanted to. we brought the game back within reach several times. it's too bad the offense started clicking late and the defense couldn't handle the infinite skill of their offense.

i'm sorry we lost but we still have a whole season ahead of us. we can still make it to atlanta and after last night's game and knowing the talent they have at cal, i think we can do big things this year.

man....mkae sur to take a good hard look at the rest of our schedule and let me know if you still feel confident....I dont see AInge throwing deep effectively for at least 3 more weeks maybe longer....its going to take a while for that finger to get well enough for him to throw deep accurate balls downfield

I'm wondering, when you went from bar to bar talking to all your know it all buddies who aren't crying this morning, did y'all happen to talk about our piss poor tackling, run blocking and inability to shed a block?

Don't judge us b/c we are concerned about the season. There were ALOT of things we saw last night that raise alot of concern and questions. Things we shouldn't be seeing at the University of Tennessee in our first game of the season when we are fresh.

Yes, there were some good things, but you are kidding yourself if you think that Cal team would be any better than the 4th best team in the SEC, so we are in trouble.

Cal will be decent, but not great...they'll go about 9-3

TN is an 8-4/9-3 team at best

whatever. take it like a man.

Yes, the overwhelmingly more intelligent and dedicated football fan's response. Go get em BigSteve, I'm sure we are working like heck today to teach guys who have been here 3 years how to tackle and shed blocks. You sure got me.

lol...I guess taking like a man includes not caring that UT fielded the worst looking defense in recent memory.

Cal? They'll lose to USC and lose 1 or 2 more.
They don't have a good enough defense to go 11-1.
They might go 10-2.

I'm pretty sure the idea of his post was to the overwhelming number of people that refuse to take anything positive and attack those that do.....kinda like what happened here.

lol. just because i didn't wake up this morning with the incredible sour taste in my mouth that you guys are all sporting doesn't mean i don't care about vol football.

i'm not the type of person to worry myself into a corner and cry all week because of an hour of football that didn't work out in my favor. you guys are putting too much effort into the worry process and stressing yourselves out. "we're gonna go 5-7!" and all that. pshh, please. it's the same people that type "we did it!" in the "we beat florida" thread 2 weeks from now. i just think you guys are stressing yourselves out horribly because of what happened last night. it's the first game of the season, people looked rusty. it'll be ok.

and i was raised in a ole miss house. i know a thing or two about losing seasons and all that rif raf. i was taught growing up to be patient and not so quick to be pissed off.

i'm just saying look at all the things we do have to be happy about. there's more plusses than minuses. and one of those plusses is a loss. i hope people start underestimating us. last night was not the UT we will see from now on. believe that.

very much agreed bigsteve, it's not as if the season is lost. Now that the coaches have seen the team on the field, and can now pinpoint exactly what areas need work. I'm not trying to say there weren't problems last night because there clearly were. Down by 17 and having the ball 1st and goal on the 3 I can't understand why we didn't just give the ball to Foster and pound it until we had the TD. FOr some reason Fulmer calls 2 passes and we get no points, that was awful. We had been running the ball at them all night long. Clearly our D-line needs some work, we need to get a significantly better pass rush and the tackling MUST improve. Let's just wait and see how things go next week and go from there. If we lose to So. Miss, or start off 0-2 in the SEC losing to Florida and Georgia then there's obvious trouble. However, for the same reason that preseason polls are rediculous, let's just hold our judgement 'till we have a good body of work to judge from. THIS WAS JUST ONE GAME.

QUOTE]

i hear ya there.. i was PISSED off last night, pissed off... and showed it.. pissed other people off with it

but i'm from Boone, NC and APPALACHIAN beat michigan in the big house.. and i'm a sox fan and clay buchholz threw a no hitter in his second start

so just because i'm PUMPED about those two things happening does not mean that i don't care about the vols, because if i heard the word redemption one more time i was gonna rip my own head off

****i butchered the quote for some reason.. my fault

BIGSTEVE09....I agree with you 100%....We have a team and it will get better....Tonight....Cal was better than us.....Congrats to them.....If our coaching staff does what I expect them to do....this game will serve us greatly in becoming a better team....It showed our weaknesses and some of our strengths....The reason that Tennessee is Tennessee is because we will learn from this game....What I really believe that I saw last night was a team that was not going to give up.....GO VOLS!!!!

I'm sticking with my gut. UF is gonna hang 50 on us. We'll score 35-42 because their defense has lots of holes. Ainge can't throw more than 10 yards right now, the running game is ok, and the crowd is going to be obnoxious. I am dialing Rich Rodriguez right now.

i think florida will score, there's no doubt about that.. but so will we, and if we can get a run game going we can slowwww the game down a little bit so we aren't trying to have 1:26 4 play 78 yard drives every single time they score

need to be able to calm down and have slower drives

I'm with you, BigSteve. We lost. We have lost before and will lose again. I just hope it isn't to the dadgum Gators.

not saying i hate the thought of a 78 yard TD pass to brent vinson... but that'll have to be earned by playing solid football

I really don't think that he is hampered so much that he can only throw short passes...

I remember a couple of long strikes, but the receivers just weren't getting enough separation. Accuracy and power were not the problem. If we had open men down field, that's where Ainge would put the ball, but when young receivers are all covered up, we have to go with what they give us and hope for consistent catching and running.

We lost a hard fought game, a game that we could have won. While our play was not as good as we would have liked it surley was not as bad as some would believe. Our mistakes were few but the ones we made were costly. The lac of back side protection for Ainge resulting in a Cal td one play the fourth and goal at the one for us no td one play, the five yard O line motion call came at a real bad time one play , Lac of punt return coverage on one play and the Cal rushing yards. If you look at the stats it was a even game except those things. I think these things can be fixed at least by the Fla game.

That was my impression, too. Ainge's passes looked crisp, they were just mostly 10 yards horizontal and not down the field. During the warmup he seemed to be throwing fine, too. Of course, I don't think he threw any really long passes. The Cal guy next to me at the game kept commenting about all of the short passes that Ainge was throwing. Either way, I think Ainge demonstrated consistent poise the whole game.
