I have a hard time trying to figure out why Georgia's Matthew Stafford is constantly being so hyped. I am sure he is a nice kid and all and was highly rated coming out of high school, but I have yet to really see him do anything that makes people think he is so great. He was a little better last year than the year before, but he still throws too many interceptions and make poor decisions under pressure. I was even looking at one of the Mock drafts for 2009 and they had him coming out early and being the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft. I really just don't get it. Can someone besides a Georgia fan help me understand this?

I personally think Crompton will have a better year than Stafford. So, I am going on record as saying by the end of the 2008 season, Crompton has better stats and an overall better year than Stafford.

I truly believe it's a by product of two things:

1. He was a "can't miss" prospect coming out of highschool. People deemed him the next Elway due in large part to the cannon he has strapped to his right shoulder

2. He had an excellent game against the media darlin' Florida Gators and then mopped up against the weak part of UGA's schedule afterwards...

Seriously, the UF game gave fuel to the fire of everyone who had previously annointed him the next great QB ...I honesly believe thats why you're hearing so much about him now and it's one thing I'm anxious to see this year (whether or not he flops)

Nice avatar BTW:)

He's still riding the hype wave. So many have hyped him and aren't ready to admit they went a little overboard in doing so.

Thats the only thing I can come up with, he certainly hasn't impressed playing against us.

I'm the last guy to give UGA props for anything, but Stafford is probably as good as advertised. He threw for 2,500+ yards and 19 TDs last year. Those numbers really aren't that far from what Peyton Manning was doing as a Sophmore.

And I am going on record as saying that your car is adorned with some sort of UT regalia and that you probably have a life size picture of Phil Fulmer in your bedroom.

With all due respect, their stats are not that similar.

In his sophomore year, Peyton was 244 of 380 (64.2% completion rate) for 2,954 yards with 22 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions.

Last year, Stafford was 194 of 348 (55.7% completion rate) for 2,523 with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

I was impressed at how Cromp. handled the LSU game when he came played. That was a ton of preasure.

His numbers are actually way far off from Peyton's sophmore year. Peyton's TD to Int ratio was 22/4. Stafford 19/10. Peyton's completion % was 64% for almost 3000 yards. Stafford 55%. Peyton was a much more mature and efficient quarterback. Stafford gets hype for his arm but he is no where near the quarterback that Peyton was in college. We will see this year if Stafford can live up to the hype. There is a lot of pressure on him this year.

Crompton was not very good in that game, and we lost.

But he was composed... I don't think we'll have to worry about him being intimated under pressure. He's been there, and while he didn't play great, under the circumstances he didn't do all that bad.

I agree he didn't blow the doors off of anything...but we were ahead with what...2-3 minutes to go...

In the end we lost that game because our defense couldn't hold LSU frm going 70-80 yards in 2-3 minutes

agreed, 55% at the collegiate level, where you get to play 5-6 patsies, is atrocious.

His receivers didn't help him out any, but he's just not overly accurate today and is one of the worst thinkers in the conference. Maturity might help that some, but it's going to have to arrive in a hurry if they're to live up to the hype. If it does arrive, they'll be stout.

and also we were a little screwed by refs that game iirc

I don't think he is that great. I mean Tebow, yes, he very good, but Stafford has not shown me anything to impress me. He rode Knowshon Moreno last year and i expect more of the same. I don't buy the hype anymore.
