In 1997, Peyton threw for over 300 yrds and 4TDs in the 38-13 victory over Georgia. But, he wasn’t the SEC player of the week. That award was given to Jamal Lewis. Lewis carried the ball 22 times, for a freshman record 232 yards, including four runs of over 30 yrds.

In 1961, the Vols finished 6-4. Still using the Wing T offense, they had a plethora of running backs. The bruiser was Jack Nichols, at 6’0 and 210 pounds. Nichols ran 53 times for 231 yards and 4 touchdowns.

In 2004, due to injuries, the Vols used 3 QBs that threw for over 2,700 yrds. Speedy junior Chris Hannon was responsible for 230 yards, on 21 receptions, and 2 TDs. Hannon was timed at 4.37 in the 40, and will be remembered for his 3 TD game vs Miss St in ‘05.

As I recall Johnnie Jones was the first UT back to gain over 1,000 yards rushing in a single season. Given some of the names from previous years, that was quite the accomplishment.

Used to tool around campus in an old, but shiny, red pick-up truck.

In 1991, Andy Kelly helped lead the Vols to a 9-3 season. Kelly threw for 2,759 yrds and 15TDs on 228 completions. Kelly will always be known as the leader of the epic comeback vs Notre Dame during the ‘91 season.

The 1991 game at Notre Dame, a tale of two halves and the redemption of the orange britches. In the first half, the curse of the orange pants was apparent, as Notre Dame scored on Tennessee turnovers and led by 24 points in the second period. In the second half, the Vols D got stingy, befuddling the Irish. The offense began to click, scoring three TDs. Vols special teams cemented the victory, when Lincoln got a piece of ND's late field goal try. A contemporary of mine, an ND alumnus who was at that game told me that there were as many clad in orange as not in the chapel after the game.

My dad officiated some of Mumford's football games when Johnnie played there. He always claimed Jones was one of the best players he ever saw during his time as an official.

In 2007, a highly touted freshman rose to stardom in Knoxville. Eric Berry made a name for himself early, as he replaced a fifth year Sr after the first game, and never looked back. Berry made Freshman All-American after 86 total tackles and 5 interceptions. His 222 interception return yards set the Tennessee record (broken by him in ‘08). He returned 1 of them for a TD.

Cleared to play (knee) only minutes before his final home game in 1979, Jimmy Streater lead the Vols to a second half comeback. Down 10-0 at halftime, Streater led the Vols to 31 unanswered points and a 31-10 victory over Vanderbilt. Streater finished 13-23 for 221 yrds and 2TDs, including an 85 yarder to Anthony Hancock.

From 2010-2013, Michael Palardy made 109/115 PAT’s and 37/50 FG’s, good for 220 career points. Palardy ranks 9th in career FG’s made in UT history. He is currently the punter for the Carolina Panthers.
