In 1986, the Vols faced the Golden Gophers of Minnesota in the Liberty Bowl. Sophomore QB Jeff Francis led the Vols to a 21-14 victory to finish the season on a 5 game winning streak (7-5 overall).
Francis finished the game with 243 yrds passing and 3 TDs while being named MVP.

In Memphis, Peyton Manning played Ole Miss for the first time. We all know the background, and Peyton made Rebel fans ever more upset. Manning was nearly flawless, as he went 18-22 for 242 yrds and a TD to Marcus Nash in the Vols 41-3 victory.

During his career (‘71-‘73) at Tennessee, Eddie Brown was a stalwart as a safety and punt returner. He helped lead the Vols to a 27-7-2 record and was an All-American in 1973. He finished his career with 10 interceptions for 244 return yards.

The #1 ranked Vols traveled to Nashville to play the Commodores, trying to complete an undefeated season. After a 3-0 first quarter, Tee Martin hit Peerless Price on a 67 yrd TD pass to help UT to a 41-0 victory.

Tee Martin finished the game 13-20 for 241 yrds and 1TD.

I watched him play. I think it was in the early 70 s. I was at the game sitting in the student section. We all were passing around whiskey bottles. It drizzled rain most of the game.
We were playing Auburn and if I remember correctly, we won 27-0.. In that game Eddie Brown blocked a punt and got kicked in the mouth. We had a great time that day.
My memory is kinda vague but I was there. It was many years ago.

After a loss to UCLA, the Vols hosted UAB. Gerald Jones and Arian Foster each had over 100 yards, but is was Jonathan Crompton, who was, 19-31 for 240 yards and 2TDs, that lead the Vols to a 35-3 victory!

Mose Phillips played for UT from ‘91-‘94. He is most famous in Vol lore for his “Parting of the Waters” touchdown reception vs UF in 1992. During the ‘92 season, Mose had 52 carries for 239 yards and 2 rushing TDs (Cincinnati and South Carolina.) He is now coaching in Nashville at Cane Ridge HS.

Wearing Smokey Grey uniforms, to honor the victims of the wildfires in Gatlinburg, the Vols won their third straight bowl game for the first time since the ‘94,’95, and ‘96 seasons.
Josh Dobbs rushed for 118 yrds and 3 TDs, while Josh Malone caught 9 passes for 120 yrds and a Touchdown. Their 238 combined rushing and receiving yrds, led UT to a 38-24 Music City Bowl won over Nebraska.

in 1970, the Vols finished 11-1 with a victory in the Sugar Bowl. UT was more of a running team, but Bobby Scott had some weapons to throw to. Tight End, Gary Theiler was third on the team with 22 receptions for 237 yrds and 2TDs (UK and Vandy)

In 1990, the Vols visited Vandy with the SEC Championship on the line. In what is arguably the greatest single rushing performance in UT history, Tony Thompson led the Vols to a 49-20 victory. Trailing 17-14 at the half, the Vols exploded for 35 second half points behind Thompson’s 3 TDs. Tony would finish the day with 31 carries for 236 yards and 4 TDs. The Vols would finish the season with a victory over Virginia in the Sugar Bowl.

In 1969, Ken DeLong was named All-SEC for the second time for the 9-2 Vols. From his Tight End position, DeLong caught 22 passes for 235 yards and 3 TDs. He was the brother of Steve and uncle of Keith, both All-Americans at UT.

In October of ‘83, the Vols traveled to East Rutherford to play Rutgers. On a windy day, the Vols struggled to score, but Johnnie Jones broke the record book wide open. Jones set school records for carries (41) and yards rushing (234) in the 7-0 victory! Jones would finish the season with 1,116 yrds, setting a single season record, and led the SEC with 111.6 yrds per game.

From 1983-1988, two decorated linebackers roamed the Tennessee Defense. Keith DeLong and Dale Jones were named All-SEC and All-Americans and led some of the best UT defenses in recent memory. During their illustrious careers, each collected 233 tackles.

In 1997, Peyton threw for over 300 yrds and 4TDs in the 38-13 victory over Georgia. But, he wasn’t the SEC player of the week. That award was given to Jamal Lewis. Lewis carried the ball 22 times, for a freshman record 232 yards, including four runs of over 30 yrds.
