Could Fulmer be looking at lesser coaches to handpick assistants?

This is a very interesting thought. This could be something going on right now. Seeing these lesser named coordinators, unsuccessfully HC's who are now coordinators, and young coaches.....

Makes me think Fulmer could be wanting to not only choose the coach, but put his assistants in place too...

This is not a good idea. Hire a HC and let them put together their staff where they CAN WORK TOGETHER. Chemistry in football is very, very important.

Hopeful I'm wrong on this, but the way this is playing out it's smelling of Fulmer wanting to set everything up for a coach..... that can be trouble. Like Butch hiring Shoop and then putting him in a room with assistants Butch picked alone and telling them to figure it out.... it doesn't work

If this is going on Fulmer should just take the job. If he is going to handicap a coach by picking the assistants.

Hopefully this is not the case, however with the names out there it's smelling 🐟

Or maybe he is just holding the cards close so that the fanbase doesn't meltdown. Not advocating against what happened to Schiano at all but come on...the man is a Tennessee legend, doesn't he deserve some trust in his abilities to conduct a search without baseless accusations from us?

No I agree, I'm just saying at this point with the names out there. It's looking this way...

Either that or Tennessee is keeping the actual coach quiet and doing the exact same as what happened with Schiano and hit the fanbase from left field???

This would mean they learned nothing from the backlash of staying quiet then left field hire

I said this yesterday and the response I got was - what coach wouldn't want to work for a former coach?

smh

Yea I don't think most people understand how hard that can be..... especially if the AD is from the word go telling you who would be good assistants.

That's a tough place.

Fulmer needs to realize he is not the head coach, He needs to let whoever he hires to do their own thing and not try and be a clone of him...It seems he is trying to go in that direction which is not a good thing.

Not exactly.

Fulmer is an old school guy with a history of being manipulative. It is not unreasonable at all to think he'll hire a guy he's familiar with and doesn't have a lot of cachet so he could influence him. Guys like Miles (hard to influence him given his past success) and Venables/Morris (lack of familiarity, part of a newer breed of coaches) don't really fit that bill. A guy like Mel Tucker or Kevin Steele fits the bill.

Fulmer believes he knows exactly what it takes to be a great college football coach because he was one once. I do believe Fulmer knew and had what it took in the late 90s, but I'm not sure he knows today. A really common reason mentioned for his firing, which I still agree with to this day, was that "the game had passed him by." His recruiting had gotten stale, his scheme had gotten stale, and his coaching staff had gotten stale. We were saying this in 2008 and earlier. If the game had passed him by in 2008, how far is the game ahead of him today?

There's nothing to suggest that he's doing that. Nevermind. I just looked at who I'm responding to. Maybe your boy Currie will be able to land one of the open AD jobs.

We, as fans, need to realize we are not the head coach, AD, or anything else. We need to let the man who is hired for the cleanup job do his due diligence. It seems we are trying to guide a coach search from our armchairs, which is also not a good thing.

Be a fan, not a pundit. He will make a good hire for the program...maybe not a great one, because who are we kidding at this point.

I just hope that we can support this hire because we used our kryptonite up already.

Yet some in the fanbase are willing to hire Kiffin based on the assumption that he has "grown up" since he left us high and dry in 2009. We all fit the narrative to our liking. What we as a fanbase, HAVE to do, is be ready to support the next guy so that he is not cursed before he even takes the podium

some of you wouldn't be happy if we brought in saban or gruden today

let this play out... don't speculate.. I trust fulmer WAY more than currie and Haslam. give it time even if we don't win a natty in year 1 lets worry about beating some SEC teams and be in the mix for the SEC east first

Fulmer will not pick assistants for the head coach. It's not happening. Suggestions may be offered but that is it. Some of y'all don't seem to appreciate the introspection that can occur over the period of a decade. Whoever is hired will be given the latitude and resources to assemble his (assuming it's going to be a male) own staff.

I have no doubt that you have some connection to John Currie, and/or the Haslams. You were the only one on board with the Schiano hire, before it was even announced. You were on here trying to sell the idea to the masses and when that didn't work you went away with your feelings hurt. Now you're back trying to plant seeds of doubt about Coach Fulmer.

Can you document that history?

I just told everyone what was clearly happening on Schiano. And he is a good coach.

Interviewing Tucker 3 times and interviewing Tee Martin 0 times.....

Might want to think on what I'm telling you right now....

Fulmer will want a coach that will re-institute the traditional Tennessee football culture. Play great defense, and have a good running game, which means on first and goal at the one being under center and handing the ball to your 4 star TB. So no Leach, no Kiffin, here's hoping its Venable. But it will be a pound the rock kind of guy.
