On ESPN College Football Rumors

When rising junior Prentiss Waggner was moved back to S to cover for the absent Janzen Jackson, two players figured to have the inside track on Waggner's old CB spot: rising senior Art Evans and rising sophomore Eric Gordon, who each started six games a year ago. But true freshman Justin Coleman emerged as one of the team's surprises, finishing the spring listed as a co-starter with rising senior Anthony Anderson.

A three-star S in the class of 2011, Coleman enrolled early and quickly made an impact despite the presence of Anderson, Evans, Gordon and rising junior Marsalis Teague, who started eight games at CB last fall.

"He's a competitor; that's what I loved about him," Dooley said of Coleman. "You know those guys in high school that play everything and do everything? That was him. It just says something about their competitive nature."

Will all that talent -- plus a bunch more incoming DBs -- Coleman is far from guaranteed a starting job, but he should definitely be in the mix for playing time. "I think Justin is going to be a good solid player," Dooley said. "He's tough, he's physical, he's still light right now and he doesn't know the difference between Cover 2 and Cover 3. But that's OK. He'll get that. He's got the right kind of intangibles and he's instinctive."

Our Secondary is going to be loaded with young talent in August...it will be very fun to see how it shakes out. Assuming Janzen comes back this is what I think we will see.

CB1 Prentiss Waggner/M. Teague/Justin Coleman
FS Janzen Jackson/Prentiss Waggner
SS Brent Brewer/Eddrick Lofton/Pat Martin
CB2 Byron Moore/I Lanier/E Gordon

But you would have to think Art Evans, A Anderson, and Brian Randolph will get time too...it is a good problem to have!

Anything is possible but most likely the starting corners will be 2 out of this group: Moore, Lanier, Waggner, Anderson, and Teague.

Evans and Rogers will be backups IMO.

depth at the defensive back position is key. A well conditioned athlete can only take sprinting 50 yards back to back to back so many times.

It seems like everyone in our secondary was just described as rising. At least everyone is moving in the right direction!

One has to wonder if he signed at Bama, UF, or OSU then this would read "four-star".

Does Dontavis Sapp figure in the mix? He's a guy I'd like to see moved to LB if he can't crack the two deep at DB.

I'm curious as to what happened to Naz Oliver(obviously I know he's still on the team)......heard a lot about him last spring....then nothing

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised to see him at OLB in the fall and we need bodies there.

Sapp perfectly defended a pass across the middle in the O&W Game. He really made a beautious play on the ball. Looks like he belongs on the field.

Saw that. I don't have his height/weight, etc. but he looked like he is fairly thick and has a body that could add some weight. Not long or lean. A speedy OLB like the old days is where I hope we are headed.

UTsports has him listed at 6-2, 215lbs coming out of the spring. Would be nice to have that size and speed on the field somewhere.

With the Lineback depth issues, and Brewer's size, aggressiveness and speed, there will be a lot of Nickel.

With Janzen my guess would be Waggner, Teague and Moore would be those three. Without Waggner / Moore at Safety and Anderson to replace the other in the CB mix.

Its only a guess though. There are a lot of guys who haven't seperated themselves yet.

Coleman is probably going to be good, but playing a ture freshman at Corner is almost spotting good opponents a TD every game. Coleman's got all the talent in the world, but a single freshman coverage misread is 6.

I like Loften, but based on his number of statements that he will be in, its safe to say Loften probably doesn't know Loften's status.

With the knuckleheads at the clearing house red flagging tests he passed, this is not entirely his fault.

I agree. We will be seeing a lot of Nickel being run this year, which will open the door for a lot of CB or S blitzes.

With all the talent and depth we have in the secondary, I wouldn't mind if the Nickel was our base defense. 4-2-5

Nothing wrong with having a solid rotation at all positions so the players can stay fresh for 60 minutes.

I suspect the staff intentionally oversigned at the corner position for this very reason. CB is a much easier position to recruit when you're playing catch up. If they can play with speed, tackle reliably in space, and swarm to the ball I think our secondary will be much improved. Run D might still be sketchy but I'm hoping Hood and Couch help mitigate our limitations up the middle.

This is gonna tick some Vol fans off but I think we're gonna look a lot like a BSU defense this year and next but by 2013 it'll morph into something resembling a traditional SEC D.

Coleman has been one of players I've been most excited about in this recruiting class. I found it interesting to find this today.

Won't tick me off. Looks like the best way to get the best players onto the field. If Couch and Malik are the runstoppers we think they are, this could work out.
