From the overall lack of production from the WR unit, coupled with the reports of coach Jones having to spend more time with receivers personally, does anytime else think that Azzani is the next one to be on his way out? I feel like Butch has proven that he is serious about upgrading his staff this off-season, and obviously WR has been a weakness at this point. Too much talent at the WR position to have such little development and production.

It's possible but I don't get why you would wait to this point to do that. We did just get a d-coordinator but we heard rumblings of that prior to this week. I would guess that 2016 is Zs year to put up or shut up

I for one wouldn't lose a wink of sleep if he was let go. His recruiting this year has stunk and it's mainly because the receivers aren't producing anything. No top receiver is going to come if there barely going to get 400 yards for the season.

Azzanni has done a very good job in some respects. We have some of the best blocking WRs in the nation and he's done a lot with special teams, as well. We've struggled with route running and catching the ball.

I'm still not sure if Azzanni is the problem or not, though. While it's easy to forget, we basically lost our top two WRs this season (Pig Howard, Marquez North). North technically played some, but it's obvious in hindsight that he wasn't the same post-injury. We also had a series of other issues, including Von Pearson's suspension, P-Williams injury + ACT stuff, and several other smaller injuries.

Also, important to remember, that about half of VolNation wanted to fire Mahoney last year, and blamed him for Dooley's issues recruitings OL. Here were are in 2016 and our O-line looked spectacular in the Outback Bowl. So as it turns out, Mahoney is pretty damn good, and has achieved a miracle this season, developing a lot of young talent quickly. To the extent he struggled in 2014 and early 2015, it was because he inherited a disaster.

I trust Butch to evaluate things. It's really difficult to know as an outsider what was going on given all the surprise issues we've dealt with on WRs. I can certainly see areas where ZA has been an excellent coach, but obviously the WRs struggled catching balls this season.

Doesn't he also coach special teams? If so I doubt it.

He coached one aspect of special teams, like other assistants did as well. Elder was the special teams coordinator. Azzani helping out on special teams will not be a factor if Jones wants to make a change IMHO.

I'm not really sure the punt return numbers were better because of him either. Maybe had something to do with the fact you have a NFL caliber player back there whose blockers are now a year older and stronger.

I wouldn't necessarily call north a top WR. He had a good freshman year but that's about it. Every receiver we have is highly talented and its the coaches fault that they can't catch the ball or run a route. He needs to get them on the pitching machine catching tennis balls. That's how Robert meachem and denarius Moore learned. Something needs to change.

Agreed, plus you can't forget his "stance" technique that I don't believe anyone else in the SEC or much less the NCAA is using. He's been given plenty of time to produce with the talent he's been given to work with at WR position, and he has yet to do anything with it imo.

I think North was (maybe/hopefully) is still, but that back injury did more than most thought imo.

I give Mahoney credit where credit is due, our OL was much improved this season, but I also think that could be a testament to DeBord putting our OL in positions to be successful with his new offensive wrinkles he added to our run game. Either way, Mahoney deserves some praise as well for developing our young, but talented linemen such as Hall, Jack Jones, and Robertson. Also, Kerbyson was night and day compared to 2014. Going to miss him.
