So few people understand what they are seeing. My first "oh crap" moment on UGA's defense last year was when they sacked Clemson's QB with a 3 man rush early in that game.Except it wasn't a "front 7" yesterday.
It was rushing with 4.
People still don't understand what was happening. They deliberately rushed 4 most of the game, because the better they get at that, the better our defense will be.
The more effective bltiz and stuntz will be.
Not to mention if you can generate any pressure with just 4, that means our backend has more people to cover.
More defensive variety can happen when you have 4 that can rush. The only way you develop that is by just rushing 4.
This was a game for them to try and expedite that development.
Ideally you'd like to blitz only 1/4 of the time.
What coverage were they in on the busted play? Both Charles and Burrell ended the game as leading tacklers.
- This game was Charles first start at CB. Seems to be a good tackler. For righ now though, he seems to be a much better safety. He needs reps. Banks took him out for 3 series after a busted coverage while....
- CB1 (Burrell) gave up 5 catches for 70 yards and THREE first downs...and was not taken out for 3 series.
Hadden played well. Like a good CB should vs Ball State.
This position needs more competition
Cover 2.What coverage were they in on the busted play?
I am not sure he id slow. I think it is more not playing good technique on run-pass plays. I do know that our opponents often pick on him.I haven't given up on Burrell yet as it was still first game, but he got exposed again last night. I don't know if he bites too hard on the WRs first cut or just slow, but they were able to get separation from him all night.
They did that (3 rush) in that game a few times because:So few people understand what they are seeing. My first "oh crap" moment on UGA's defense last year was when they sacked Clemson's QB with a 3 man rush early in that game.
I think the biggest problem for me was the cushion they were giving to the WRs. I said earlier we were willing to give them just those simple quick outs, and they were happy to take them. That seemed to be by design, I'm not exactly sure why that was the design, but it was.
Still the two biggest catches of the night happened against McDonald and McCollough (or flowers, really just a coverage bust but not sure who it was on). More or less everything else was just either screen passes or those quick outs. Both Burrell and Charles had a little trouble getting out of their breaks and to the WR on the edge. I'm sure that just a little technique refinement, but I thought they were fine overall. I'd certainly like to see more press coverage that could help eliminate some of those quick short throws.
At the same time, Hadden clearly looked like our best option at the position. He needs to be starting for one of those two. McDonald or Walker seem like they'll be fine at NB as well.
