Conservative Javier Milei Is Elected the New President of Argentina

What I am about to share can come across as sanctimonious. I do not intend it that way. I hope your friend comes through this a better man. I hope, in whatever way possible, God helps him in this.

I hope your friend keeps his character and integrity in tact in prison.

This is a weird personal thing, but as many of you know, I served a Mormon mission. One of my mission companions was Argentine. About a year ago, he was arrested for assaulting his neighbor* who is a cop. Me and some other ex-missionaries, gave him money for defense. His ruling came down today. He's gotta serve 8 years in prison. I am having trouble processing this today, and it's a little therapeutic to talk about it.

Tying it into this thread, all the while I've been thinking about how much has changed in the last year for Argentina. Seems like he's not even gonna recognize his country in 8 years.

*the story I got was that the neighbor kid throwing rocks caused damage multiple times to his roof, he confronted the neighbor multiple times, this time the neighbor threatened him, then said he was going to get his gun, and my friend clubbed him with a rod (one swing) and it ****ed the guy up pretty good.
Best wishes for all involved. I do know in most Latin countries self defense can't escalate above the force used. In other words iif you use a club against an empty handed person, even if they are actively trying to harm you, you are guilty of assault with a weapon.

If the neighbor just threatened him and wasn't trying to harm him in the moment, that's probably why...

Interestingly, we got to a Latin city a few days ago and a guy in the park was following us in a very sketchy manner. I told him to leave us alone and he didn't. Just kept stalking us.

No way I was going to combat him unless he did more than follow. Just had to wait for him to do something.

Eventually wife and I ducked into a restaurant to wait it out. The guy stopped and stood outside staring at us. We didn't say a word but the store owner grabbed a stick and chased him off.

Sorry for the random story but... I won't personally escalate in Latin America. The store owner certainly would... shrug...

Again, best wishes to your friend.

Man that sucks. I’m sorry about your friend. Eight years is way too harsh.

Tough stuff.

Ex-wife was Mormon. I have a lot of respect for the missionaries and the folks I knew in the church. Kudos to you on that.

Over the years, I have heard the saying "Have you ever met a Mormon who wasn't nice?" and my experience is there is a lot of truth to that.

So while we were married, while looking up some stuff, she finds out my great-great granddaddy who fought as a Confederate partisan in Missouri had been "baptized" by someone in the proxy thing for the dead. He was shot off the back of a mule in NW Arkansas after the War by his two BILs, who he had announced he was on his way to kill. I told her, "well, I know at least one Mormon who isn't nice."

And I'll add to everyone else, I hope the best for your friend.

I'm gonna take what might be an unpopular look at this. So the 'victim' in this case threatened to go get his gun. Huff's friend grabs a 'rod' and hits him and " ****s him up pretty good". What does that ("****s him up pretty good") mean? Is it grave bodily injury? Paralyzed? Broken bones? crushed skull? I get that the neighbor (victim) was an ******* and has ******* kids, but Huff's friend actually escalated the situation and caused (how severe) injury? Ever heard of one punch homicide? If there was only a threat of grabbing a gun, Huff's friend was in the wrong.
