Commentary: The Michigan comparison

UT fans should ponder if they’re ready to endure what their Michigan counterparts are suffering through in Carr’s absence.

We are already suffering. At least Michigan has some hope for the future. This article seems to have some holes in its logic.

muck fichigan!!!!!

Hell yeah!

And I love how this guy talks about Michigan losing to Toledo. Last year, Carr lost to App St and then badly at home to Oregon after that. Those were probably more embarrassing than the Toledo loss. No one expected them to be that good this year anyway. About every Michigan fan I know still feels good about their program's future.

Here is a related question that I don't have an answer to. Hoping you smart people will figure this one out. Why don't we see our situation as the same as the Penn State 2000-2004 run where they had 4 of 5 seasons under .500 with the last two at 3-9 and 4-7? Since then they went 11-1, 9-4, 9-4 and currently are a BCS championship contender. All with the same "dinosaur" of a coach in place who had "seen the game pass him by".

Jo Pa won the Big10 Championship in 2005 and is competing for a chance to play in the BCSCG this year.

We are on a 10 year drought and things look bleak.

Michigan fans aren't going to tolerate mediocrity very long. Rodriguez better win big next year like Meyer, Stoops and Tressel did (all 3 won national titles in year 2). Some fans are already getting tired of his offense.
That isn't the expectation at Michigan right now. After four years, we will have a better idea of Rich Rod's situation once he has a full class of his recruits come through. My guess is he will have a Big 10 title at least and be on the upswing.

Paterno now is little more than a figurehead. He's earned that though with what he's done for Penn State. Fulmer hasn't and I doubt he'd give up that much control over the team.

Also, I don't think PSU had as much talent as we've had. Look at the players from Tennessee's 05 team. They probably had more NFL players than PSU did from 2000-2004. Not sure I can name many PSU players in the pros from that time period. Larry Johnson? Bryant Johnson? Levi Brown maybe.

I'll agree with the first paragraph. That is a good point. Not sure I am there for the second paragraph. I think our 2005-2008 talent is overrated by us fans.

I do see it the same way. Joe Pa had even more years of service under his belt and the administration felt the same pressure to let him leave or stay on his own terms. I think we are in a similar situation to Michigan already. The change at OC meant a fundamental shift in the way we run our offense, and the fact that Rod is having trouble implementing it because of his players, or intelligence of said players, really is no different than what Clawson is going through, except he's apparently second guessed by CPF. I know things are going on behind the scenes, more than any of us know or can speculate on. From the switching of Qbs, to whatever the powers that be are trying to make happen. I look forward to seeing what happens this week and the rest of the season because there's more to this than the won loss record. Support the players, Go Vols!

a problem that should clearly be placed at the office door of the head recruiter, whoever that might be.

I think we had a lot of good players on those teams, but they just didn't/weren't developed until late. Gaither, Gibril Wilson, and Jabari Greer all come to mind. All drafted in later rounds but good NFL starters right now. Plus the recruiting class rankings I'm sure will favor UT. I remember a big deal being made about Penn St getting some top recruits in '05 since they hadn't gotten any in a while.

But yeah I understand why you think our talent was overrated, but I still think it was better than Penn State's.
