Saw the article this morning and remembered most around this board have Comcast.

Comcast blocks some Internet traffic - Online World - MSNBC.com

Comcast Corp. actively interferes with attempts by some of its high-speed Internet subscribers to share files online, a move that runs counter to the tradition of treating all types of Net traffic equally.

If widely applied by other ISPs, the technology Comcast is using would be a crippling blow to the BitTorrent, eDonkey and Gnutella file-sharing networks.

The "Net Neutrality" debate erupted in 2005, when AT&T Inc. suggested it would like to charge some Web companies more for preferential treatment of their traffic. Consumer advocates and Web heavyweights like Google Inc. and Amazon Inc. cried foul, saying it's a bedrock principle of the Internet that all traffic be treated equally.

Yep, they're just terrible. I couldn't imagine having my internet through Comcast and only having internet access for 180 days out of the year..

Traffic shaping is nothing new... but the way Comcast is doing this is being compared to the Great Firewall of China.

My current ISP, JEA, uses some port filtering that greatly reduces the speed of most of my torrents, along with all my regualr internet traffic... so I just do my torrents at night and the next day while I'm at work. I've got to watch my shows!!!

I went out of my way and got a phone line (that I don't use) with DSL to avoid doing business with Comcast.

Their customer service is not existent. In fact, this reminds me of a story:

At one time in my life, I thought I had a handle on the meaning of the
word "service."

"It's the act of doing things for other people."

Then, I heard these terms which reference the word SERVICE:

Internal Revenue Service
Postal Service
Telephone Service
Civil Service
City & County Public Service
Customer Service
Service Stations

Then I became confused about the word "service." This is not what I
thought "service" meant.

So today, I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had
hired a bull to "service" a few of his cows. BAM! It all came into
perspective.

Now I understand what all those "service" agencies are doing to us.

I hope you now are as enlightened as I am.

Not an option, I don't live on a prairie that only has one tree off in the distance.

FYI, setting your BitTorrent client to start looking for ports 6881-6999 and opening those ports in your router will fix this issue.

Comcast blocks 10,000 and up b/c that's the default setting of most trackers. They do NOT block these other ports. I have it fixed and I have no problem. As long as something is seeded well, then I get stuff fairly fast.

This only affects SEEDING. And setting your port to the old defaults (6881-6999) will not solve the issue... you will still be blocked from seeding a file. "Well, then what do I care?!?!" you say... because if you can't seed, then the guy you would normally get the file from can't seed either.

On one hand, i like comcast, since the pay a good part of my income. On the other, the tech support is good, though the overall product is mediocre.

Someone talked about a temp through their yard. Odds are, it is not the problem, but it is a cheap fix, and will make things marginally better. Comcast sees this as cost savings, replacing the cheap RG6/RG11 home drops than the feeder cable on the poles and in the Underground plant, which in many cases is 500 Coax, which hasn't been used for 10-15 years. The newer 625 Coax they use for comcast is better by a sight, better signal due to the larger center conductor.

The 500 carried the load until the digital boxes became prevelant, and then the addition of cable internet and phone. It just can't do the job anymore. But, the only way you'll get your trunk and feeder line replaced in your neighborhood is to keep complaining, and encourage you neighbors to do the same.

Personally, i use AT&T for all my services, incl dish network, i had to cut some limbs for it, and am very satisfied.

good if you can get through that is.

I never had any problems, when i had Comcast. Bad feed to the tap, so the high channels would be somewhat pixelated. Naturally, the only channel over 70 or so i watched was Boxing on PPV, the always apologized and refunded me, plus let me watch the end of the fight on the house. That happened twice.
