College Gameday discusses Lane Kiffin

there was red flag thrown up at some point during kelly's process, from what i understand, leach had an interview lined up but did not show. not sure about the leach, but i am for sure about kelly and some issue. not sure if it was the racial remarks or something else. if i had to guess, it would be that he wants the nd job. kiffin was always on top of the list, and no it wasn't because he had no buyout.
No buyout and a 2 million dollar salary? Is the program trying to come out on the cheap? There was all kinds of talk about matching a Saban type of salary to lure somebody to Knoxvolle. :dunno:

Your sources?

Fowler also said the hire is being considered a cheap and easy way to fill the position. Whats done is done. I was really leaning towards Kelly. However, last night when May said the hire was a bad one, I feel great about Kiffin coming on board now.

It's all falling into place:

1. ESPN hates us which means
2. they dog the hire which means
3. We will be an underdog in our big games which means
4. We will win because we always play better as underdogs

Hello National Championship!
:whistling:

First I'd like to say than while I support kiffin, I agree that it is a risk. The risk in this hire is actually what I like the most about it. I believe Kelly or leach would have most likely made us "good". Well I don't know about y'all, but I don't want to be "good", I want to be "great". I feel as though kiffin has the chance to make us great because of his youth and ability to recruit. I also acknowledge that there is a good chance he could be a bad coach. But I have faith in mike hamilton because he hired Bruce. All I have to say is have a little faith, hamilton knows what he is doing. He knows that this is a risk, but no risk no reward.

If Fulmer had surrounded himself with better assistants, ie; a proven OC this last time, we would not be in this position. Kiffin saw how USC emerged as a powerhouse. His dad is well respected as a DC. I would rather have Cheif if dad doesn't come on board though, gives some continuity to the program, and Chavis is a great DC. Kiffin is young and entergitic, and hopefully feels he has to prove himself in a big way. His first test will be with a Oregon team that is choked full of speed. I am looking forward to the game next year.

I'm hoping it's a case of spending it on the assistants. If this was done to be cheap then that's a game the university will lose. Maybe we'll get the dream staff.

Oregon? We play ucla next year which he should know a lot about coming from usc

Maybe this is why Kiffin is being called a risky hire-

Experience (College or Pro, not including Student Asst or Grad Asst)

Butch Davis- 29 yrs coaching, 16 yrs as DC/HC
Brian Kelly- 18 yrs coaching, 18 yrs HC
Mike Leach- 20 yrs coaching, 20 yrs OC/HC
Lane Kiffin- 7.25 yrs coaching, 3.25 yrs OC/HC
Chris Petersen- 20 yrs coaching, 8 yrs OC/HC

With respect to Leach, his track record of having simply average seasons is playing itself out again this year. He is going from dream season to average very quickly. Mighty Baylor....eh!

I wasn't big on Leach the guy compared to CPF was going to be no upgrade. Brain Kelly would have been nice but I don't know if he would have stuck around long his dream job is ND.

The more I think about it the more I think this is purely an outside the box type of hire. Hammy knows there are few "great" coaches out there that will win championships year in and out, and money is apparently tight (given the choice). However, the sportsanimal yo-yos may have pegged it...what if Hammy is hiring Kiffen only b/c of the supporting cast he draw? Like any managerial job, a strong staff will make you or break you. Instead of spending the dough on the main man, hire him relatively cheap and spread the wealth among an all-star cast of coordinators and positions coaches. This course of action gives you a leg up on the competition.
