I heard a former Navy Seal speak a few weeks ago about mental toughness. He said he has taken cold showers for years and felt that it can add mental toughness, no matter who you are or what you do.
I tried it starting monday and have tried to add a minute or two each day. Monday sucked and I only lasted about 30 seconds before bailing. I took a 6 minute cold shower this morning. The last 3 or so was just standing there under the water with my eyes closed and trying to focus.

Has anyone else tried it or challenged themselves in any other way that might hurt a little but benefit the mind?

I cut myself and put cigarettes out on my arm. Does that count?

Sometimes I jump into the Clinch River right underneath Norris Dam. Pretty chilly

I took an ice bath a couple weeks ago, thinking it would keep my muscles from getting sore after starting a new workout. All it did was make me come 6 inches from passing out and probably getting hypothermia.

Was fun, though.

I could feel my heart struggling to beat. It felt like I was 10,000 feet below sea level and the pressure was strangling my bodily functions.

Did you know that if you put a dollar bill on your forearm you can't burn a hole through it with a lit cigarette?

Okay, didn't read, but judging by the title, let me rephrase:

Ice baths do nothing for muscle soreness caused by weight training.

Also, it's a lot more painful to get your whole body submerged up to your neck than it is just your legs.

No, the purpose of the article is that it is mainly a tool for long distance runners. I don't see a benefit for weight lifters.
