Hey Nation I mentioned this the other night in the chat room, should we defer or start our offense on the field if we win the coin toss. I like it when we defer then we receive the ball after halftime. I dont know if we want to start the game off by kicking it to Jackson, and him running it all the way in to get the momentum going for Cal. Thoughts.

I am torn, on one hand I want to get the ball and hit Cal in the mouth with the running game.

On the other hand, naw, I want to the ball so we can hit Cal in the mouth!

i always prefer to take the ball, but that opening KR for a TD didn't seem to help ginn and OSU too much last year against florida.

Iowa won a share of the Big 10 in 02 and they returned the opening kick off for a touchdown.

USC then scored like 41 unanswered.

what is the point in defering when you kick and the get the ball? why not just say kick and not have to do the whole meet at the 50 after halftime? anybody have a reason or is it just one of those things

tedford has said he wants the ball to send the message to the other team that his offense believes they will score on every drive. and his record on opening drives is pretty darn good. it can immediately set the tone for the game and put the other team on it's heals.

If we win the toss I think we'll take the ball. we should be up by three TDs at the half so we wont need it right away in the 3rd quarter

Do we pick the northwest endzone or southeast?

I have heard a few coaches talk about this issue on the radio a few times in the past couple of weeks. The conventional wisdom of deferring to the second half has changed due to the rule change moving the kickoff spot back five yards. Poses a whole new question regarding taking the ball in good field position or deferring.

they sure dont have the parking we do.

the city of berkeley would rather endorse jeb bush for president than allow us to build more parking lots. it's completely nuts. I know 20 year season ticket holders who don't have decent parking passes. it's also why our tailgating stinks.

well, we usually end up parking way down the strip if the apartment parking places are taken, but people pretty much wrap their vehicles around neyland.

Exactly . . . I heard Mark Richt on the radio today saying that he is directing his captains to always receive the opening kickoff.

WOW! I think that is a big change. Its going to be interesting to watch this season to see how the rule change affects college football.

Fulmer said this about it today:
"It will lean more towards that (taking the ball), but not necessarily. It will depend on the weather, their kicker, how you feel about your defense. We've talked through it as a staff extensively," Fulmer said. "Before, where it was kind of a given (to defer), it's certainly not a given anymore. There are a lot of factors there now."
