I didn't see this anywhere else but it looks like Terrance Cody, Bama's big NT, will be out for our game this week. If the coaches decide to let Hardesty run against Bama this year then the injury helps our chances of running the ball.

this is great news for our offense i mean i feel bad for the kid, but the whole cornerstone of a 3-4 defense is a solid nose tackle so this bodes well for the run game

Yep, the Sunday Sports Shows were discussing this. Definitely SHOULD help our running game.

From what I am reading the #2 NT, Josh Chapman, represents about zero drop off from Cody. Supposedly, Chapman is stronger than Cody in the weight room. The real drop off will come when Chapman needs a rest. The 3rd string NT, Nick Gentry, weighs 250-something. Basically, the Vols are going to have to generate first downs against a top quality DL if they hope to win.

Alabama went to a 4-3 after he got hurt. Ole miss had some small success running the ball but they had ample time to throw. They didnt get the push they got with Cody.

You also have to remember that Ole Miss has a better offense than UTK this year. Ole Miss is averaging 12 points and 80-something yards more per game than the Vols this year.

I think the Cody thing will not help or hurt us.
We couldn't run the ball against UCLA. We couldn't run the ball against North Ill.
We couldn't run the ball against MSU until they gave up.

Guys...last year they suspended 5 starters right before the start of the game and proceeded to beat the crap out of us...

Just saying I don't think any one player will make or break them...they are a good team that we are going to have to flat out beat...it's pointless to hope that something favorable like this will be the deciding factor

Hate to be nitpicky, but you might want to check your stats regarding our ability to run against UCLA. I recall that we averaged about 5 - 6 yards per carry, but for some reason went away from it.

As far as Mount Cody is concerned, it is always helpful when a 3 - 4 team loses their best Def. nose tackle. That guy dominated in the Clemson and Georgia games. I'm glad he won't be available.

Not to mention the really don't use cody on pass rushing plays. Also I would think with cody on the DL that Alabama will blitz a lot more to counter his injury. Replacing a player like Cody is almost impossible but the drop off talent at the position is not that large. Their backup, chapman i think, is supposedly the strongest player on their team in terms of strength. They could also end up moving their starting DE washington (i think) back to NG because thats where he played last year.

Wow - all of the sudden we actually have hope. This guy was their defense. Atleast a huge part of it.
