Just a quick update. In the event that the "person" in cahoots with Kiffin in regards to the haircut, Pope's hair seems to be slightly more tamed.
I passed him on my way to Humanities last week and his beard was trimmed as well as his hair being puled back in a ponytail and shorter. If he was the person, it sounds like he's at least gotten it under control enough to be OK with Kiffin.

I have no problem with long hair ..........as long as the player has made a significant contribution to the team. Cody Pope hasn't done jack..........and should have to wear a crewcut. IMO.

I would like for the whole team to get together and do what my flight and I had to do in the Air Force, just shave everyone's head. It's all about brotherhood (no racial underlying tone so don't try) in football. It's also about everyone being equals right now, until Spring practice hits.

This isn't the military. You don't give up your rights when you play college football. If a kid wants hair, let him have it. Just keep it decent.

Righst are an excuse to avoid conforming to a oneness. If you are a team there should be dedicationto the good of all, not just the individual.

when you choose to sign the papers to take money in exchange for your education they have a little control over you. If the hair is more important than being a member of the football team then he can quit.

No it's not the military but it's also not a democracy. There are times a coach solicit player opinions but in the end it's his decision and team to run. Doesn't mean I agree with the "hair" rule but if he's doing it, he's doing it for a reason.

If they resist cutting their hair, let them walk. They are getting a free education and playing on a team. If they can't deal, they can go find a niche in the X-games.

How is everybody having a buzzcut dedication to the good of all? I think it is a much more effective display when the players take it upon themselves to get on the same page and it helps build leaders on the team. Instituting mandatory crewcuts just leaves room for resentment among the players and I really think the coaching staff has more important things to focus on.

I would be all for CLK requiring the offensive linemen to all wear wigs and makeup after last year's schoolgirl performance. They should be embarassed.

I agree with your statement. While I think it looks trashy to have long hair I think these players are young guys and they are going to do things like this. To me there are bigger fish to fry.

I was in the military and we did shave our heads in Boot Camp to build teamwork so in the event we are getting shot at and our lives were on the line you could trust the guy next to you. This on the other hand is a game not sure rules like this are necessary.

Call me an old stick in the mud but if the head coach says cut the hair you should, even if you think he's being unreasonable or excessive. If his word isn't the last word you have a team of individuals who usually will play like it. Sounds familiar like last season.

I agree with Kiffin wanting them to keep it clean and presentable. They are representing their fellow teammates and the U.

If Kiffin wants his hair short put him in at rb and tell the D the only way they can tackle him is to pull him down by his hair. It shouldn't take too long for him to figure out he needs a haircut. At least keep it where it all fits in your helment.

Agree, success in team sports takes unity, discipline, and valuing the good over the team over the preferences of one.

At this point, our players don't need any rights. They ran roughshod the past several years and look where it got us.

Keep in mind that long hair is a part of certain religions and cultures.
Being presentable is the key and Polamalu's hair doesn't keep him from being one of the best players and teammates in the league.

If a kid honestly has long hair because of his faith or culture, I would be OK with that. But those circumstances are going to be pretty rare, much more so at Tennessee than, say, Hawaii or Pac 10 schools. I doubt Cody Pope could make that case.

Me neither, but implementing rules about short hair would be silly. I'm sure that leaving it at "Don't embarrass yourself, your team, your coaches or your university" would keep things in check and anything else can be handled on an individual basis like Pope was. Kiffin is handling this well.

When a person freely enters into an a agreement then it is perfectly legitimate to expect that standards be set and obeyed. Playing CFB on scholarship is a PRIVILEGE not a right. He has the RIGHT to go elsewhere if he doesn't like the standards but his rights are not being violated by rules.

One of the biggest problems in our country is that people... and worse among the young... have virtually no concept of what constitutes a "right".

I'll give you this... if Kiffin can institute team discipline, unity and cohesiveness without mandating personal grooming rules, fine. But my larger point is that the rights of the individual are far outweighed by the overall good of the team.
