Coaches talk to the media 3-4 times a week, plus all the one-on-ones and specials they are asked to do. In the top programs, every word they speak is scrutinized to the nth degree. While some of them have developed better media habits than others, it's a part of the job that very few of them enjoy, especially the open conferences.
Reporters who have put in some time with them and get a one-on-one, usually get far, far less "coach speak" from coaches. Some coaches absolutely HATE doing media at all (see Bill Belichick), and reporters are going to always get almost nothing useful from them.
