Coach TV has started a revolution

I’m an old school baseball guy…my first love growing up. Played, coached for many years, and just now realizing why I lost interest about a decade ago…it’s slow, predictable and downright boring in ways. It’s hard to watch anymore without some form of involvement….playing, coaching or a child playing. This team has changed that for me…it’s become must-see TV.

Thank you Coach Vitello for rejuvenating my interest in the game I love..

It's nice to see the guys having fun, and I don't mind the brashness. But the fur (or whatever it is) coat in the dugout for home run hitters to put on? That's too much for me--rather bush. The "daddy" hat--fine, but the fur coat isn't helping the game. There are pro teams that do similar things--have some sort of curio (a Viking helmet or a wresting belt, etc) that is awarded to the player of the game, as decided by the captain(s). But they do it /after the game/, in the locker room. Nobody puts a viking helmet on a player during a game who, say, has scored a goal in hockey or scored a touchdown. Ditch the fur coach.
Get off my lawn!

I’ve always loved baseball. I played and have always been a supporter of all things UT. One thing I’m certain of is Tony V is responsible for making college baseball more exciting than it has been in who knows how long. It just feels like his attitude towards the game has awaken everyone across the country.
I love having TN baseball to follow now that ESPN+ carries all the games. I was in school during the Todd Helton years. That was fun. I love our team this year.

Yes and No. There’s established programs like Texas, LSU, and FSU that have been filling the stadium for years. Definitely, has Tennessee fans following baseball.
While I agree, what would wrasslin in the 80’s be without the 4 horsemen? Would there be a Hulk Hogan without Roddy Piper?
We need villains and fortunately for us, the loveable heels are our Tennessee baseball Vols!
GBO!!

I think they should add a cane accompanied by a pimp walk to the wardrobe. I’m old school about baseball but I love this stuff. The kids are having fun with it and that’s part of who they are. Everyone’s been crapping on our sports for the past 15 years. It’s about time we start having some swag and rubbing it other teams’ faces.

"Everyone's been crapping on our sports...." "Rub it in their faces." What exactly does that mean? If you mean some of our programs haven't been very good for 15 years, well, yea--but then that's our fault. And, really, we've had some success, just not in football, and not in baseball until the last couple of years. You don't sound old-school at all. Old school is taking heed of the line: "Act like you've been there."

I think the entire athletic department is currently in about as stable a place as it’s been in a long time. It’s been awhile since we could say that.

As far as the baseball team is concerned, I also love that they are having fun. I think that’s one of the reasons why they gravitate towards Coach V. He lets them be themselves. And while their fun is not everyone’s cup of tea, there’s no question they are good kids who work extremely hard. I remember a quote from Evan Russell that stood out from last season. Paraphrasing, he said something along the lines of “We play with an edge, because we want to show the rest of the SEC that we’re no longer the doormat.”

Growing up I had a team almost start a fight with a kid that was warming up on the game mound at our home field instead of warming up in their bullpen. I had kindly asked him to go to his bullpen to warmup and he just looked at me and kept throwing. I took a couple more steps and said some not so kind words and he went to his dugout. It’s one of those unwritten rules that the home team takes the mound first so we took it as disrespect. Needless to say, first inning I got cleated stretching for a ball at first and bloodied up my leg. Dude could’ve ruptured my Achilles but kept playing. My first AB in the bottom of the inning, I told the ump to go ahead and hand out warnings to everyone and that if a ball came at my head you better save the little punk on the mound because I have the bat in my hands and this catcher ain’t going to be quick enough to stop me. We loaded the bases and hit a grand slam because we were pumped up and the blood was flowing. We double dipped them and run ruled them the second game. We didn’t even go through the handshake line, just waved bye as they sulked back to their bus in the parking lot. We were the type of team that played station to station and advanced runners, didn’t strikeout a lot. Hit the gaps and tried to hit the ball the other way. Ran hard through first even if you get thrown out by a mile. We did “all the right things”. These are the types of things I consider old school baseball mentality imo. I’m just not big into celebrations unless the other team does something we don’t like. It’s fair game once the other team decides they want to get cute or talk trash (ie Ole Miss and Vanderbilt).

“Act like you’ve been there”. Oh man haven’t I heard that horrible cliché a thousand times too many. I’ve never been to California, so if I ever visit am I suppose to drink kale and spinach smoothies even though I don’t like that stuff? Blaze your own path. That’s what this team does. This team plays with the same type of chip on their shoulder that my teams played with so I guess that’s why I love them so much.
