Coach Mears today.

Regardless of what some Pearl-o-files may want to believe, he really is the father of Tennessee Basketball.

Poor logic. Pearl honored CRM as the father of UT basketball. Maybe you should brush up on UT basketball before making such a ridiculous statement.

I am not going to argue with any one on this topic. I started this thread to point out how probably the best coach ever at UT started off in his first three years, very similarly to Coach Martin. Mears was very successful over his career at UT and needs to be remembered more than what he is. As to whether or not he resigned or was forced out due to his medical condition, all I will say is that after reading HIS direct quote in the newspaper article announcing his 'resignation', he said that he believed the decision was made a year ago, the year he was out. Nobody has told me anything official or otherwise. Google it yourself and make your own decision.
And this has nothing to do with CBP.

I don't have to Google it. I remember when it happened. Mears could not continue as coach due to his health problems. He was given the AD's job at UT Martin but he was mostly a figure head who did a lot of PR work for UTM.

You know it. So Coach Mears saying he believed the decision was made a year ago, without him, and no one had told him anything official or otherwise, I guess that was part of his illness. He was forced to resign because the school didn't want the stigma of having a coach who had suffered a mental illness. Yeah, less ship him of to that great growing metropolis of Martin.

Mears made to three big decisions when he cmd to Tennessee. He chose Stu Aberdeen as his recruiter, he brought Howard Baine with him and he signed Danny Schultz from Hiwassee JC in Madisonville. They became the best rebounder and best PG in the SEC.

I actually thought Johnny Dardin was one of the best point guards - he sure did help make Ernie and Bernie look good! He made some amazing passes during his tenure here - Loved watching that team! 👏👏👏

Mears was a good coach and he did a lot in building the program. But he was unable to perform his duties due to an illness. The Vols went 11-16 under Cliff Wettig waiting on Mears to get back but he couldn't do it. It was time and they did him a favor by offering a job in the University system so he could get his retirement in a few years.

Funny, how many people remember things with nostalgia that are much different than what really happened.
