It seems like every other day there's more stuff about Kiffin. I don't ever remember a coach getting so much publicity without ever actually coaching a game. It was good at first, but now it's getting old. I hope this guy knows what he is doing. If he bombs out this year he will be ridiculed. I used to think that UT will give Kiffin about 3 years to turn the program around. But after all this talk, Kiffin has painted himself into a corner. If he loses to Florida,Georgia, and 'Bama this year, he will look like the biggest fool that ever stepped out onto a football field.

Because he lost with Phil's players? I don't think so.
They will still give Kiffin 3 years.

I disagree. Yes, he has opened his mouth and put himself into adverse situations but to say that he has to beat Florida, Georgia and/or Bama is ludicrous. He should have you guys competing soon and he may pull an upset here or there... but he doesn't HAVE to beat one of them this season.

All he has to do this year is improve on 5 wins. If he goes 5-7 or worse then the heat will be on. If he wins 7 games or so and then assembles a top 5 recruiting class then he's in great shape. The hard part will be improving on 7 wins in 2010 with our OL issues. He'll need 8 or 9 wins to continue to sell the improvement thing. By 2011 he'll be expected to be in the mix for championships. He still essentially has 3 years unless he does something silly like going 3-8 in his first year.

the way i see it, i completely agree. and not only will the football team being ridiculed but us ourselves being the fans. People will say haha you supported an idiot. Well, what are we supposed to do, turn on our team? I dont think so. Its like what the players said," He is our coach and we will back what he says every time." So i really hope he does well because i live in georgia in a school where everybody is either a uga, auburn, bama, or florida fan. After the decline we've had, i dont know if i can take any more ridicule.

Yeah, but if he whips one of those three, he'll probably get a raise.

Disagree, the biggest fool to every step out on the field is the guy that loses to UF, UGA, Bama and Wy...

I agree. I don't know that there is a coach out there that could come in and guarantee a win against one of those three opponents, given where UT is right now and where those teams are. Sure, it's possible. It'd be an extremely unreasonable expectation though, as it isn't likely.

Dude, if you feel like you'r being ridiculed, you need to get a life. Since 1989 we've had
one 13win season
four-11 win seasons
five- 10 win seasons
five- 9 win seasons
three- 8 win seasons
zero- 7 win
zero- 6 win
two - 5 win
Most colleges in this country would kill for that kind of consistency. GO VOLS

Does the nation laugh at us saying HA! We supported Ron Zook? Oh wait...

What he said, even though it comes from a gator.

Wolfe,
Get real. You need to look at the big picture. 2011, 2012 that's when he will look like a knucklehead if we don't represent and take it to the teams you mention. I don't recall Kiffin promising to beat Fl.,Ga. and Al. this year. When did he say that?? I know some of the publicity is difficult to stomach but so have been the last few years. I just hope Tennessee fans stay true to the Vols. That corner you say Kiffin has painted himself into is only in your mind. Go Big Orange !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He doesn't have to win the key rivalry games this year to keep his job, that's ridiculous. UT fans will give him 3 years to be competitive in those, I'm sure.

Where may get himself into trouble is either a) doing soemthing embarassing to the university. I can envision a couple of scnearios for that. Or b) he talks so much smack over the course of the next year that the pressure steadily mounts from within his own camp to hurry up and produce.

In his opening press conference he said he looked forward to 'singing Rocky Top all night long after we beat Florida next year'. So yeah, he said he would beat Florida next year.

Mike Shula went 6-7 (including the bowl game) in his last season at Alabama. Saban comes in and goes 7-6 (again, including the bowl game) and they were making those goofy pictures of Saban as the second coming of Bear Bryant. It doesn't necessarily have to be a dramatic improvement in the wins and losses in the first season to make it a successful transition to a new coach.

Exactly. The reason Saban looked so good was not because he went 7-6, but because the team was better coached, more disciplined, and competitive. Given the information we have, and the debacle of last season, I see no reason why Kiffin can't do the same thing this season. Fla, GA, and Bama games will take care of themselves if there is steady improvement year after year.

It's just that whole 2 out of the last 4 years thing where we had both of those 5 win seasons that really draws the ridicule. Florida and bama fans don't care what we did in 1989...

Point is, the consistency went away.

I am a huge LK supporter, and unlike you I believe he is calculated in his violations in use of bending the rules to get the best recruits(BBrown situation and recent Joiner situation). But one of your remarks is something I have been thinking. I am interested to see how Kiffin handles press confrences after losses...I hope he handles himself well here and doesn't say anything dumb like putting blame on players ect.

Just one thing I think he needs to be sensitive about w/all the negative press.

I think he followed that with "Mike told me to say that"
