Ladies and gents, I’m liking what I’m hearing from CJH thus far. He isn’t full of dopey terms like Butch and speaks with an articulation that Pruitt certainly wasn’t capable of. No, he’s not a flashy personality. Yes, he will benefit from a strong staff that has experience recruiting the SEC. But, I feel like he’s a guy comfortable in his own skin. He clearly knows how to score in the SEC and run a team at a high-level as a head coach.

I‘m hesitant like many because of just how bad things have been, but I’m feeling better hearing interviews like this.

I can't say I "like" the hire, but I do have to admit to now being over the anger I felt when they announced the choice. For me, it was the frustration of finally realizing where this program stood within the coaching community. Knowing UT has to "settle" no matter how much money we threw at the problem infuriated me, but I've accepted who and what we are now.

Heupel is the coach because we fans really have no choice. All I/we can do is get behind the staff and hope for the best while we wait for the NCAA guillotine to fall. Some of my comments toward the man were out of line and I regret them. He didn't deserve that and frankly, I'm grateful that he was actually willing to step into this mess that he had no part in creating. For that reason alone, he has my respect and support.

My hope is that we'll play exciting ball and that we can at least be competitive within the conference to the point of being in some games during the 4th quarter with a chance to win a few. Maybe in a couple of years, we can routinely achieve a winning record. With enough stability, perhaps we can start to hope for 7-8 win seasons once more.

Then why did you just start another thread about when we should start worrying

I hate the hire but Heupel seems like a genuinely nice guy. I wish him well but have very low expectations.

People often rationalize their feelings towards the coach in a personal manner. I’ve hated all the hires we’ve made since Kiffin, but it’s not because they’re coming here with anything but the highest aspirations to succeed. They’re just not cut out for the job. so I don’t really care about “winning the press conference” or whatever interview they’re giving. I know they all want to win, but I want to see it on the field.

Heupel ain’t the sexy hire. He most certainly is a QB coaching OC play calling rock star. It is great to have someone with that type of special expertise.
The marathon pace, rushing/passing yards, and TDs/Points reminds me of Oregon back in 2014 when Mariota won the Heisman. Ironically they were #2 in total offense that season too.

I can’t wait to see this defensive staff. This is going to be the big key for Heupel here.

I'll say this.......hung out with several guys on my street tonight who follow UCF football (more of a glorified Vandy fan if you ask me) but they are very upset about Heupel leaving. They actually go to the games and say that Heupel has an entertaining, high scoring, and exciting offense.......this year was a little off due to opt outs, but they are really upset that he's gone........im a "wait-and-see" about this hire, but this is the first time that I've heard the previous schools fans upset to lose a head coach to us. Def didn't happen with Butch or Dooley.

We had to significantly overpay on Dooley, Butch and Cornbread just to get the personnel to take the job, which most fans held in significantly higher regard than the established coaching profession did, such that we became known as a big check writer, attracting unqualified coaches to take the job, knowing full well we were going to make them very wealthy just to go away when the time came. The rank staleness of the athletic department and the UT media events and scheduled broadcasts remains intolerable and the whole thing needs to be revambled, upgraded and enhanced to contemporary 2021 standards, its not 1998 anymore and ever other school has upgraded their staffs and operations, Tennessee should do the same, Danny White is a step in the right direction, but that is merely a start.

Well said. There's a lot of frustration in vol nation because we have fallen so far but maybe this is the beginning of the long climb back to relevancy. GBO

With a great DC hire he can be very successful here unless the sanctions wreck us. He can run an offense and appears smart enough to do the HC requirements like managing the game, practices and other HC things. If the sanctions are not too serious there is enough talent to have a decent season. Championships will have to come later, but at least we have a FB coach now.

Not that I matter, but I’m going to attempt to temper my expectations for three years. If we get blown out every game then so be it as I’m willing to give Coach H three yrs minimum before commenting.
I’m sure that won’t be the case for most of volnation but it’s going to take a few yrs minimum.
Go Vols!

We need to get behind the fact that he wants to be here, even knowing sanctions are coming. Pulling for him to succeed. Go Vols!
He understands the up side of coming here and being successful. Only a dummy wouldn’t come coach the Vols for millions of dollars. Or they have a true fear of failure.

Either way you don’t want that guy here anyways.

Don’t even try. That’s not the answer. Have high expectations and let the chips fall. We are talking about the Vols playing football. JH wouldn’t mind retiring here as an old man. If he exceeds my expectation he can stay as long as he wants.

How great can he make the Vols?

Jump higher Vols!
