Coach Doug Mathews says Trey Smith will be back next year.

In fairness, Doug didn't state, "Trey would be back." Doug was speaking to the O-Line next year and included Trey Smith saying he will most likely play OG next season. Doug also said the C and OG positions are more important in college football than the tackles unless your offense passes a lot such as Washington. (I think Washington was the example he used but it may have been Washington State.)

I took it as more of a, Trey is part of the team until/if we are told he is no longer part of the team.

Well, that's one way of explaining it. It depends on what the meaning of "back" is.

This whole conversation is getting way out of whack. Doug Mathews said if Trey is back next year he would be playing guard in JP's football scheme. I don't think any of you would not like that to happen. If for medical reasons Trey can not play football, the names mentioned were of the now freshmen who will be sophomores will more than likely fill the guard positions along with Kennedy at center. Sure, it is all speculation as to what will occur. Best case scenario, Trey is back, the three major positions for being able to zone block the nose and linebackers will be filled. Doug also mentioned that some players that are playing this year will not see playing time next year. Once again, nothing written in stone.

No but I have watched him miss block after block this season and provide little to no run support. The better question is what oline have you been watching?

Hopefully you understand that he has to play another year before he's even draft eligible. Not to mention the fact that he had to become the de facto starter at LT due to us literally not having anybody else to be serviceable for that role. Plus this all comes after spending an entire year playing inside at Guard. So let's be honest.. Put all that together with his health concerns and maybe we can cut him some slack.

And it is fact that we predicated our run game to the left far to often due to him being in at LT, so let's not sit here and expect him to be all world when everybody and their momma knows where the ball was going..

Did you guys also know that Kirkland is a fine football player and that Bituli is just an absolute stud linebacker who’s gonna be great NEXT year? Lol.

I never listen to Doug--but did he REALLY say that Kirkland is a fine football player?

follow up--Did he qualify it by saying maybe in Div. III???
