Coach Caldwell Presser today

There has been demonstrable progress in a key area. Recruiting.

Not giving a Rookie coach room for growth is where the expectations go off rail. I am happy with the performance thus far this year? Hell no, but I’m willing to ride.

I watched Karen Weekly’s presser this morning. It took her a few mistakes over the years, but she has learned the ā€œappropriateā€ cliches. Of course she has a team chomping at the bit to start a season, too.

Kim’s team really never had that opportunity this year. IYKYK
Isn’t Cooper considered the best player on the team? Recruited by Kellie, Boyd, too. People have been saying they miss the shooters and leaders on last year’s team, those were Kellie’s players. How about Rickea Jackson, first round draft pick, another Kellie recruit. She had players coming who would be freshmen when they came, Nyla Brooks and Finley Chastain, entirely possible there were others we don’t know about.
So, if you mean more high school recruits, yes, there are more freshmen on the team now, and Kellie has freshmen coming to Missouri next year. In this era of buying talent, freshmen may or may not stay, same with those in the portal, so maybe sometimes it’s best to get the best player you can get, whether they are already a proven college player, or a high school recruit.

I have long since ceased to play in the ā€œwe will miss Kellieā€ sandbox. I’ve moved on to the obstacle course of trying to support Kim. I just don’t have the bandwidth for both. I supported Kellie until the decision was made to turn elsewhere. Tonight will be the only night this year where i will root against her and her team… (possibly the SECT). She had her shot to step up as Glenda the Good, and may welll yet step into her set of glass slippers, but at the moment, they appear cast in black with gold trim.

I keep saying it Mizzu has players out and we HAVE TO take advantage of that. Get down low with our size and not just chuck up 3s.
The LVs must show maximum effort in this game to carry them through the remainder of this season. They must play their best and be able to take out a team of talent a few steps below theirs. There is still enough talent on this team to be competitive against any team in this country. Maybe not beat every team in this country, but to at least hang together for a full four quarters. With our talent, our superiority should be a full display against Missouri.

Lovely, but when you say recruiting is better now, that brings comparisons. Many complain about certain portal players, so not necessarily better recruiting, and the amount of money each Coach had to spend effected recruiting as well.

You really ought to consider the term ā€œtalentā€. Superiority? Have you been keeping up? Not sure if insanity or severe BVS.

Setting realistic expectations based on recent results would be a step in the right direction.

I’d have to agree that her first shot at the portal has been questionable, at best, verging on miserable. Barker seems to be the only keeper.

As far as available funds, how they were allocated (HS or Portal), now versus then, is heavily subject to unverifiable speculation and plenty of innuendo.

I sometimes watch us and think this talent tag we put on some of these players is a myth. I see to many terrible plays from them to say they have superior talent and sometimes any talent other than running and jumping. Putting a ball through a rim seems to be a shortcoming for so many on our team. Even when the shot is a free throw.

I blame Danny White for part of it. He is the one that said were going to win Championships right away. So now everyone thinks she should be winning big. We have a lot of freshmen and the problem has been the seniors and juniors just aren't doing enough or leading enough. We shouldn't lose like we've lost some games that is what had magnified everything.
People that based their entire expectation for the first two years of a new coaching staff on an offhand comment made by the athletic director during an introductory press conference, then I think that’s a you problem, not a Kim problem. No athletic Director stands up and says that you’re gonna have to give somebody five years to be competitive. You always say you expect to compete for championships right away.

I realize I am definitely in the minority but I have no issue with her post-game comments and appreciated her presser today. It's clear she is listening and considering all parts of how to get better. She's not tuning out anything. That said, I recall everyone flipping out when Pat went off on her team after a tourney loss and said Ariel needed to get to TN ASAP as the starting point guard when she was in high school. I didn't have a problem with that either. Our current team played even with the best team in the country on their home floor for 20 mins then threw in the towel. Then they just decided to not play much at all against SC. They SHOULD be called out. I don't blame the freshman, as they are a different breed of players, but there is a massive void in leadership from the upperclassman and it is embarrassing to see. Period.
I agree. In CHRIST Alone

As someone else pointed out, her first class out of the portal was great. This one has been more of a mixed bag. Barker is scoring twice as many points this season as she did at UCLA last year, well ahead of her rebounding pace as well. Robertson is producing 11 fewer points a game this year than she did at SMU last year. You’re hoping she could at least have a similar shooting percentage, but that is lower as well. Wolfenbarger was more of a reach because she hadn’t performed like she did as a freshman at Arkansas in a couple of years at a couple of different places. That was a case of trying to get more out of someone than someone else did and it not working out.

I may be wrong but wasn't Zee and Latham in her first portal ? This year needs to be better than last year for sure.

..to include a couple of juniors would be a high priority.
Five sophomores if they all stay here and two incoming freshmen. Boyd would be a junior so yes adding two would even that class out. Maybe hopefully get three freshmen 2027 and that looks like your on the right track to balancing everything out. Two portal seniors also for a class of four in April. Maybe Cooper stays another season here would have three seniors and three juniors with the five sophomores and two freshmen one that might be better than all of them looks like a promising roster. A ways to go to make all that happen.

Who's a rookie coach? Kim Caldwell is completing her third year in D1.
While i enjoy making fun of ADs present and past, my favorite meme of personal grooming has to be… ā€œBobby!ā€

Me too But then I remember they were pre season ranked number seven in all the polls. Were we all wrong?

Et tu brute? Embracing the post truth world?. We're all hucksters.

How many times in how many ways can we say that its actually not competing for championships we're expecting? In spite of what Big Guy said, most of us were fully aware it was going to be a several year task. My expectations were never based on his obvious huckster lies.

We'll have to agree to disagree on whether it's unfair to poor young Kim, at the end of her second full season, to ask for some linear progress instead of regression, underperformance, and epic beatdowns.

Always innuendo, always a jab of incompetence. You do you.

Preseason rankings are based on. Reading between the lines and you don't know if the one wrote the reading wrote the reading right šŸ˜‰ . Lot of speculation goes on Wolfenbarger didn't add anything to the team and Robertson was not going preform well in this league. Barker has all the tools to be really good just doesn't give enough effort on defense. We really need to get stronger or at least play stronger down in the paint.

I usually count on media and coaches evaluation of talent to be pretty accurate since they do it for a living. But of course they're not perfect.

In the era when you can buy a team you can change it all around very fast. Certainly not to the Championship level right away, but evidently the media fell for it as well as we were pre-season number 7 ranked. If they rank you that high your a contender for the National title. Like any other coach you hire I think you get four seasons. You do expect them to move the program upwards a little every season. Still time to get that done.
