Coach’s Uniform

I would love to force all coaches to wear a uniform on the sideline. Let’s make that change. Rick Barnes wearing the short shorts and Josh Heupel strutting around in pads and a jersey would be hilarious to see.

Barnes and Heupel could also decide to wear suits on the sidelines like Majors and Neyland did.

It’s also a MLB rule for any coach on the field to be uniform, so base coaches are required to wear the uniform. Several have brought up the player-manager role that used to be common but even in today’s game the majority of the time managers are former players. Probably would feel weird to be in the dugout and not wear the uniform. You aren’t in an open space like a field or court. You are down in a dugout. Also, I don’t know about any of you but I would not want to dirty up a nice suit being down there. I know a lot of schools have switched to turf but a lot still use dirt and I would much rather worry about cleaning a uniform than an expensive tailored suit.

Is the coach’s number official or can one of the players wear the same as them?

Many, many years ago I coached a rec baseball team and wore the team jersey and ball pants. Ump came to me after the game and told me I could wear the jersey but couldn’t and don’t wear ball pants anymore. Never gave me a reason why.

I always remember my coaches wearing shorts in rec league.

They wear the uniform and we don’t call them coaches. They are coaches AND managers! There used to be the common occurrences that the manager was also a player. But if they are teaching (doing) and not just talking they should be wearing the uniform those they are teaching wear!

…hmmm. I’ll take the bait.

At the college level and below, pretty sure we refer to the leader/teacher/mentor in the dugout as coach. I never had to explain this to anyone.

At the professional level, same role, is referred to as manager. The assistants to that role, bench, hitting, pitching, first and third base, are still referred to as coaches.

Personally, I love it. I think CTV looks great in the Vol uniform, and I want to see coach Barnes pull it off too. He would look great dressed out, although I suggest he goes all Vescovi, and puts the T shirt on beneath.
I would like to see the basketball coaches go back to wearing suits. Bring back post Vid normalcy!!!
