Urban Meyer’s second class was the foundation for the second national title in three seasons and a heavy contributor to the first. It included some guy named Tebow, Percy Harvin, Brandon Spikes, Lawrence Marsh, Jermaine Cunningham and Brandon James.
But even a class like that shows you how risky the world of recruiting can be. Of the 27 players signed that year, nine of them had no impact on the 2008 season including seven of them who are no longer with the program.

Dont judge our staff by what happens late in the recruiting season this year, but look out for the Vols next year.

We will have to have some measure of success on the field... Kids will want to see something tangible they can buy into. If the internet buzz becomes positive about UT on the field, the steamroll will be on..

What would you call success on the field? I would say 8 wins, competitive losses, and an exciting offense would be enough to set our recruiting world on fire.

The thing is we just need to make it to a decent bowl. It doesnt have to be a BCS, but better than the Poulon Weedeater.

agreed.

if CLK et al. can somehow turn one of those QBs into a serviceable starter, that would be a huge turnaround IMO...

the schedule is favorbable next year for paper success as well.

I agree 100 percent. And yes, there will need to be success on the field. I think everyone will get a good feel and understanding of the kind of offense UT is going to run this season and the type of defense Tennessee will have.

There will be enough positive this season on the field to really make a difference in next year's recruiting class. Prospects will know that they have an opportunity to come in and make a difference right away and that Tennessee is headed back to the top.

Probably the best thing about Kiff using existing QBs this season is that if he turns one of these sow's ears into a silk purse, it will have a tremendous impact on recruiting...

And I think he's gonna make Coleman into the player he should be. (just a side opinion. It's free...)

I read a report this morning that our staff has already evaluated 200 players for 2010 and had made 60 offers to this point.... The reporter stated that this was way ahead of where we had EVER been at this point! Not to mention the staff has only been complete a couple of weeks...

Sounds promising!

Absolutely sound, Cut got more praise in turning around Ainge than he did the Manning brothers. Also agree with Rex that the 2009 team just needs to compete and get better as the season goes on, end up in Fla at the end of the year. This team will help continue the recruiting buzz.........

With the way they are getting recruits to visit now, imagine if we put together a solid season next year. Our recruiting will explode next year.

Meyer's first class ranked 15th following a #7 and #2 class by Zook. It was Zook's players that made up the UF D that won that first NC. The O that year scored less than 30 ppg.

Simply and plainly put.... He inherited a much better and more forgiving situation than CLK has.

Guys this is more or less a mathematical equation. CLK NEEDS players in THIS class... especially linemen. If they don't get it then a look at the roster suggests that it won't be reasonable for CLK to compete for a championship until the 4th or 5th year out.

I don't see the boosters, media, much less many of you tolerating that and especially not if he has a losing season, doesn't finish above 3rd in the SECE, and/or doesn't get to and win a significant bowl game. But if he doesn't get contributors out of this class... I think that is the situation we'll be looking at.

I think that if we finish 15th this year I will be happy.

unless a NSD suprise, i'll say 17-22 range sounds about right i don't think we pick up many major recruits. big holes on the lines left to be filled at a later date i guess.

agreed....he got in late for the game for this class

It DOES NOT MATTER. If the class is mediocre, he's going to have a thin team this year with enough talent to compete. He'll then lose 4 OL starters and 2 DL starters. He'll lose Morley, Johnson, and Berry from the secondary plus McCoy and possibly G Wms at LB.

On O, I think Stocker and Cottam will be Srs along with Hancock, Rogers, and Hardesty. While some of these guys aren't the greatest... their replacements aren't apparent at this point looking at the depth chart.

I really think that the class after next year will be the best. he always says that you need 2 years with these kids. JMO

I hate losing Phillips. I would like to hold on to Stokes, but its not a huge blow IMO. Oku stays IMO. If we can pick up the guys everybody thinks we will, plus one or two more, it would be great.
