I love you as a poster. But I don't agree with this.

I don't have any idea how it was communicated to them. I know there were former players who were pissed off. I don't know why.

I do know that if I was training a group of people and had an agenda set, I wouldn't appreciate people stopping by without checking to see if it was appropriate timing. I'm sure I'm in a very small minority that feels this way. But I felt it when all this started happening, and I feel that way now. I think there is a respect factor on both sides.

I love you as a poster too, Volleygirl, and I think probably our differences of opinion on this particular issue probably stem from our differences as people. Our personal druthers, so to speak. You identify more closely with Dooley on this one; I identify more closely with the players who were unhappy with him about it.

If it were a player, I would listen more to both sides. But several and members of the media and high school coaches all making the jackass accusations.
I just can't trust a man who compared our players to confused Nazi troops over groups of others that are saying the opposite.
Everyone will decide for themselves however.

We weren't talking about high school coaches and media (I don't think, at least I wasn't.) But I'll give you my opinion on coaches and media since you brought it up. (And I'll get to your Nazi comment at the end.)

Coaches, above anybody else, should know that you can't just show up at a practice (at any level) and expect to be embraced. They wouldn't want it to happen at their practice, and I can promise you they wouldn't think it's okay for them to do it to another coach.

The media: I don't give a flying flip what they want. I literally could not care any less what they think they're entitled to, what they think they deserve, what they think they're owed. Today's media is a pathetic excuse for a profession that doesn't exist anymore.

Now, to your comment about Nazi troops. I suggest you do some reading. You are not alone in your thoughts, lots of people didn't get it. Doesn't change the fact that a lot of people are ignorant about history.

I'm not ignorant on history, it's just the part where Dooley was the one responsible for having them ready and not confused.

As far as the coaches and media, I wasn't talking about showing up at practice.
But like the players, they all implied he was just a complete jerk when the cameras were off.
The fact that they say the same as players just adds to the whole thing.

But, I don't see any number total that would ever convince those that he seems to draw in when he speaks.

In regards to Rommel, valid point that he should have had them ready. Still doesn't dismiss the fact that the majority of the fanbase heard that and thought "Nazi".

For me, it was those things that gave me a dislike for the man.
Not him taking a really good job offer. He just didn't appear to give the effort you would expect for a dream job.

Either way, I know some disagree.
Not like I'm going to dislike you tomorrow over DD.

I'm sorry, but the German troop comparison was accurate and funny. It was just way too high a concept for a football crowd. The only thing I liked about Dooley was the press conference.

I know it's hard to do, but for all the continued criticism of Dooley try for a minute to put yourself in his position: Have you ever had something that you failed miserably at? Now imagine there were millions of people watching you as you fail. How do you expect him to respond? He is going to defend his actions as best as he can, and he admitted he made mistakes.

I'm no Dooley fan, but I didn't have a problem with this interview and actually appreciate him for being willing to do it with nothing to gain. The only thing I think he should have done differently is to resign out of respect when he realized he was in over his head. But lets be honest most of us probably have too big an ego and would convince ourselves with a little more time we could fix it. Oh yeah, and he probably didn't want to give up millions of dollars either.

To this day, I doubt he thinks he was in over his head. He really wasn't all that far way from being successful. If they had any defense at all in year three, he'd have won 8-9 ball games. Sure, the defense is on him, but it goes to show that the difference between success and failure is small.

I'd wager he could point out a handful of things that he could have done differently that he believes would have made a difference. I don't know that it is true, but I am confident he believes that.

I also think he may have had a little longer leash if he had a better personality. When you're not having success, every little quirk gets scrutinized. I think people wanted him gone as much for his personality as they did his record. And, if he would have progressed on the field, most all would have dismissed his antics. Either way, I am pretty sure the reason most people think he's an a$$hole is because he is.

In the end, showing him the door was the right thing, and I like the new guy a LOT better. But, I'm not going to beat up on Dooley. He failed. It happens.

more of the same from Dooley. i didn't hear anything i didn't think i would. it was nice to hear some acknowledging of some mistakes.

anywho...i said it when he was hired....and i still feel the same way....

Well, on the bright side, when the "football crowd" needs things explained...

Of course there is always the possibility that everyone understood the analogy but saw the flaw in logic (him being responsible for teaching the team what they didn't know). Well, almost everyone.
That concept seems low enough to grasp.
