In 2015, Mike DeBord was hired to replace Mike Bajakian as offensive coordinator. At first the choice seemed like a good one since he was with Michigan in 1997 when they won the national championship.
However he did flop as a head coach for Central Michigan with a record of 12-34.
When he returned to Michigan as Offensive Coordinator in 2006, he led them to an 11-2 season.
He did try the NFL from 2008 to 2011 but that didnt work out and then went back to Michigan in 2013 but this time in an administration role.
Mike DeBord was good in 1997 and pretty good in 2006 for the B1G
Phillip Fulmer was better than good in 1998 and good in 2007 for the SEC.
Fulmer was let go and walked away realizing his time had passed.
DeBords time has passed too. He gave away 4 games last year and if you watch the SEC network season in 30 from last year, you will see he almost gave away a couple of other games to Georgia and South Carolina.
He would probably do great back in the B1G against Maryland, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, and Wisconsin. The others would be a challenge for him.
But we are the SEC. He will struggle with Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Texas A & M.
In the SEC he struggles more than he does great. I feel he is past his prime and the dynamics of the game have passed him by. We need to get an offensive coordinator who understands the football of 2016 not the Football from 1997 or 2006. The game has evolved in 10 years.
I love the Vols. I had to move to Michigan in 2008 and have made 4 yearly trips to Neyland Stadium each year since moving. I suffered thru Kiffin. I suffered thru Dooley. Now I am suffering thru TN having the right team, the right skills, and the right schedule to become National champions and instead I have to watch them almost lose a game to Appalachian State that DeBord couldnt beat in 2007 with Michigan which if you notice from my above information was 1 year past his last good year.
His play calling is soft and reminds me of the Dooley years. He is trying to show we have a passing game we dont have. He only wants to hand the ball to Hurd despite having both Kamara and Dobbs as running threats. We have 2 quarterbacks on the bench we can build our passing game on later in the year or next year but right now we need to be threat with the running game and make better calls.
I had planned on at least a 10 -2 season, expected an 11-2 season, and hoped for a 12-0 season. From the play calling I saw last night, I now am hoping for an 8-4 season with losses to Alabama, Florida, Virginia, and Georgia.
I feel we have the talent & even the head coach but until we find the right offensive coordinator we will run with Hurd on first down, run with Hurd on second down, pass to the flat on third down and punt.
