I keep seeing it mentioned in multiple threads, but I’d like to start a conversation on how that can benefit him and us going forward. I feel like if a coach isn’t a total twat to players/fans/media they get a naturally longer chain than those who are generally unpleasant.

I’m not the biggest fan of the hire but he definitely seems more genuine than Pruitt was

Being a jerk is acceptable....if you win.

But when you lose, being a jerk makes sure you get no grace and mercy. A negative personality turns everyone against you quicker. Meanwhile, if you are nice, and you lose people at least think "he is a likeable guy, he just couldn't get it done."

Heupel is likeable. But we will see how likeable he is if he starts losing.

I wasn't Wowed by the hire, but my opinion is starting to change. Cornbread , like Doolittle, let the team know most were sorry sacks of s--t. Definitely not up to Bama standards. JH is letting them know they are wanted, appreciated and will be coached up. I fearlessly predict JH will get their all on GameDay. That didn't happen much last year.

Everyone has their own style. As someone said, even the most difficult guys are tolerated as long as they win. But CJH seems to be very focused on having tight relationships with the players and between the players. He used the word "love" quite a bit... which is the basis for the idea of Christian servant leadership. Even secular leadership gurus understand the power of that ideal and have tried to use it stripped of "Christ".

I have no idea if he will be worth a damn as a head coach but he seems like a genuinely decent person.

Likable helps restore the fan bases confidence in the position. After the catastrophe of a Beldar it's much needed. Beldar was universally unlikable along with the rest of his pitiful qualities.

Everyone (players and fans) loved Butch to begin with, and he did some really cool team chemistry things. I would say several players were excited about Pruitt at first as well, as he was a very well respected name.

It comes down to how a coach handles losing, because he has 3 of football’s heavyweights on his schedule every year. Butch and Pruitt both folded after losing enough. They got irritable, angry, then lost the locker room.

CJH is doing the right things right now and is very likable. Will he be that way after Bama trounces him for the third year in a row? That’s the real question.

I think Pruitt was an honest, decent guy with his players, and recruits. He just wasn’t camera friendly, and disappointingly couldn’t or wouldn’t try to improve.

Heupel is definitely the best dude among the last five head coaches, a low bar IMO. One exception: I would take Joey Freshwater as wingman in a single’s bar.

Let’s hope the good dude finally gets us over the hump!

I really like heupul, but I don’t know many successful leaders who are likeable. Nick saban seems like a dick, hell Steve Jobs was known for being a jerk.

I agree with you CJH is a hell of a lot more friendly than Cornbread

Good point. I remember being shocked hearing Pruitt coming off the field at halftime vs Bama in 2018. He said it wasn’t going to improve until he got 25 new recruits. How would that make you feel if you were on the team? Even if he had that much dead wood, the good coaches win with those guys. The two best position coaches from that staff (Johnson and Rocker) were shown the door. Jones was the only coach we had that didn’t make his name within a dynasty. He knew the value of development, but he was a phony and the word got out. CJH can literally say the guys that stayed are HIS guys. And if he can win with them, that’s the best coaching we’ve had in years.
