Guys, it's coaches first year and it was extremely exciting. Arguing that he should be the coach of the year when another team goes undefeated is rediculous. Especially with 5 loses. Most fans that think he should have been given the award are also the ones that cry, bitch and moan that we should have beat, Pitt, Fla, Ms, Ga, Al...blah blah blah....if you think we should have won well then - isn't that on the coach... The same one that you want to give the award to? Ya'll are crossing things up here.
Coach is gonna be good, real good but it takes time. He will get his shot, he must recruit. I repeat, he must recruit in order to compete at the highest level and that is what we all want to see happen.
Need to calm the tits and let's start the train a rollin'!!

Well I think there is another perspective to consider. Everyone predicted Georgia to be exactly where they were, undefeated through the regular season and in the playoffs. So their coach did not exceed expectations. In fact it could be argued that the SEC Coach of the Year was out coached in his last game. When you compare that to Heupel his team far exceeded expectations. Not only in wins but the way his team competed and transformed the offense. Despite the final score of some of these games we were in it for much of the time. We played the hardest schedule of anyone and considering what all the pundits said about the team being gutted the overall record was great.
So you believe the award should go to the coach of the best team because the coach constructed the roster. I, and many others, believe it should go to the coach that gave his team the best chance to win and out performed what most predicted. If that is the standard the Heupel is clearly the COY.

I am no Kiffin fan, but he deserved it more than Smart, but not as much as Heupel. Stoops was also more deserving than Smart. Heck, Saban was more desrving than Smart.
Don't forget Pittman's great year! Also, dude for SC had a great year/unexpected win total as well.

I think the award should have gone to Rodney Gardner. No coach got more out of his athletes than he did. I know COY is a Head Coach award but Gardner "Did the most" with what he was given.

Smart had a stock pile of high caliber players to compete with and has been there several years. He still managed to lose the SEC in a year in which he should have dominated that game. He did nothing spectacular expect let another big game slip away. Smart did less with more as always. Heup came to TN when nobody else wanted to touch it. 4 losses were to teams with 10 plus wins and 2 of those we were in up until the last whistle. If you think that's not major improvement and one of the biggest turn arounds in sports today you have lost your mind. Our best players transferred out and he still managed to pull this team together. This team should have been sitting at home this bowl season but he pulled 7 wins out of these guys. Heup did way more with way less. There's your difference.

What exactly do you disagree with? This will be interesting...
Don’t think I said I disagreed with anything did I? Are you just looking for someone to argue with or try and push your views off on others that may or may not agree with you?

Don’t forget we played 3 teams that played in a conference championship game in which 2 of those teams won.

I think it should’ve been Heup 1 and Beamer 2 considering what both teams had to work with coming in.

Kirby underachieved based on expectations. He was supposed to win the SEC but didn’t, again. CJH lost 30 players and still managed to win 7 games as a first year coach with expectations from his to win roughly 5 games.

I think we should have beaten Pitt and Hype didn't deserve to be in the COY discussion.

He had a decent 1st season and I'm looking for next year to be better.

Thought JH should have won, but Smart, Layne, Pittman all had legit arguments to win...can see Kirby getting it, but I'm OK just being in the conversation. How many times in past decade has our coach been ranked down there w/ Vandy, SC...let's save something to shoot for next year...keep Hooker, go 10-2 and votes may tally differently next year.

Maybe there is a second team all SEC coach award....I don't get it. Every team has injuries/transfers/bad ref days/etc... ga crushed everyone on their schedule. everyone else....not so much...
give credit where it is due.
