Andy Staples seems to think "magic" could happen. It rhymes with pampering. All of us Vol football fans need to get used to the idea even with the portal opening, we are not going to get an upgrade at the QB position this coming season. At best we need somebody that won’t make the big mistake, which for that position means no fumbles, few interceptions, and limited sacks. I have yet to see Heupel put a UT QB on the field that routinely throws the ball away rather taking sacks. We can be successful this year but not if we expect or put too much on inexperienced QBs this season.
While I agree, I like the idea of going after a starter from a small school like this. If you find someone who has been successful as a starter but doesn't have prototypical measurables, it becomes basically a risk-free deal. There are guys out there who are good college players who aren't getting paid much and don't have much hope of making it in the NFL because they play against weak competition. We don’t need a starter. We need a depth piece. Why is this so hard for some fans to grasp?
I would take 2 QBs and get them competing with the young ones. While I agree, I like the idea of going after a starter from a small school like this. Look at Kyle Walljasper, for example. He's a 6-1/240 senior. He's a fast, physical runner. He completed 68% of his passes last year. Only threw for 2000 yards in 10 games but he had 22 passing TDs to just 5 INTs. In the past 2 years (21 games), He's got 68 total TDs, 8 INTs, only 2600 yards passing, but also 1900 yards rushing. He can't be getting paid much because he plays at Central Missouri. I'm guessing that his NFL stock is low because of his build, so maybe he feels like competing for a starting job on the big stage is worth the risk.
Why wouldn't we bring someone like that in?

That's why I think a 5th year guy will be very helpful, experienced and mature enough to manage the offense at a minimum and very well could have a breakout season. They ran a very similar offense to what the Vols have been running. Ogbonna seems to have patience and experienceMy question is how effective any "starting" QB will actually be with such a limited amount of time before fall camp begins. Can he learn the playbook? Can he build chemistry and timing with his receivers? My biggest question will be Heupels evals. Does this new QB actually be a fit for our offense? Do we even know what our offense will be? Will it be Heupels fast paced/no huddle? Pistol? 2 TE set? Can the OL and running game take some pressure off the new guy? Can the defense and special teams also be solid to avoid adding too much to the offensive plate? Just don't see how they can pull off a new starter in this window.
That kid is good and would be perfect as he adds the QB power running element (alanTebow 2009).While I agree, I like the idea of going after a starter from a small school like this. Was very impressed with GMAC.One thing to remember....portal works both ways.
IF Heupel takes a swing at an established, extremely talented QB, it's a potential legacy moment for both Heupel and the QB.My question is how effective any "starting" QB will actually be with such a limited amount of time before fall camp begins. So let me get this right @madbamahater. “Runs the ball well” and “has good stats with his legs too.” Am I missing something here?I believe CJ Ogbonna could step right in and play immediately. Runs the ball well and has good stats with his legs, too. Buffalo had a great season last year and beat Liberty in bowl game.
