Meh, Mack should start over him. He kinda reminds me of Milton minus the impressive attributes. 6 of 20, for 55yrds, and a pic against Miz last year doesn't bolster much confidence.

All of us Vol football fans need to get used to the idea even with the portal opening, we are not going to get an upgrade at the QB position this coming season. At best we need somebody that won’t make the big mistake, which for that position means no fumbles, few interceptions, and limited sacks. I have yet to see Heupel put a UT QB on the field that routinely throws the ball away rather taking sacks. We can be successful this year but not if we expect or put too much on inexperienced QBs this season.
Andy Staples seems to think "magic" could happen. It rhymes with pampering.

We don’t need a starter. We need a depth piece. Why is this so hard for some fans to grasp?
While I agree, I like the idea of going after a starter from a small school like this. If you find someone who has been successful as a starter but doesn't have prototypical measurables, it becomes basically a risk-free deal. There are guys out there who are good college players who aren't getting paid much and don't have much hope of making it in the NFL because they play against weak competition.

Look at Kyle Walljasper, for example. He's a 6-1/240 senior. He's a fast, physical runner. He completed 68% of his passes last year. Only threw for 2000 yards in 10 games but he had 22 passing TDs to just 5 INTs. In the past 2 years (21 games), He's got 68 total TDs, 8 INTs, only 3600 yards passing, but also 1900 yards rushing. He can't be getting paid much because he plays at Minnesota Duluth. I'm guessing that his NFL stock is low because of his build, so maybe he feels like competing for a starting job on the big stage is worth the risk.

Why wouldn't we bring someone like that in?

I would take 2 QBs and get them competing with the young ones.

My question is how effective any "starting" QB will actually be with such a limited amount of time before fall camp begins. Can he learn the playbook? Can he build chemistry and timing with his receivers? My biggest question will be Heupels evals. Does this new QB actually be a fit for our offense? Do we even know what our offense will be? Will it be Heupels fast paced/no huddle? Pistol? 2 TE set? Can the OL and running game take some pressure off the new guy? Can the defense and special teams also be solid to avoid adding too much to the offensive plate? Just don't see how they can pull off a new starter in this window.

That's why I think a 5th year guy will be very helpful, experienced and mature enough to manage the offense at a minimum and very well could have a breakout season. They ran a very similar offense to what the Vols have been running. Ogbonna seems to have patience and experience

Rizk may be a good addition as well, but to me he seems like he is a tough scrappy guy like Vandies' QB. Not sure the Vols need this kind of guy to just slugfest every game.

That kid is good and would be perfect as he adds the QB power running element (alanTebow 2009).

Strong arm and has experience.
Perfect stop gap to allow George to get another year of size and strength

One thing to remember....portal works both ways.
Was very impressed with GMAC.

The thought of having a freshman QB and Freshman WRs as the starters doesn’t sit well, but maybe we can throw heavily to Matthew’s and Davis while running Bishop, Thomas, Lewis 57% of time.

But GMAC isn’t Nico in regards to his toughness as a runner. Nico was also skinny but he played RB all through little league and midget football. H was used to it. However GMAC might be more decisive and accurate.

I don’t want to lose Tennessee to lose him.

IF Heupel takes a swing at an established, extremely talented QB, it's a potential legacy moment for both Heupel and the QB.

As I see it the season starts with GA. I might be overly optimistic but I think Merk can handle Syracuse and ETSU giving the new guy lots of time to get ready for GA.

It's possible the pistol and wrinkles we've heard about from practice were Heupel hedging that Nico might walk and looking for something that works at a slower pace with less reads and more set plays. I'm not in a position to suggest Heupel should run this or run that or change this or change that offensively.

It will be a very exciting Spring portal for UT. It could be anything from: Okay, we're going with Merk all the way to OMG, how did UT get THAT guy to transfer in the Spring?

Can whoever transfers get up to speed? Experience will help. A lot. I wish we could get someone with SEC experience or at least B1G experience. Big boy football ready. I wish Josh Dobbs had a son.

Maybe it wouldn't matter but IMO if Hype brings in a QB from the portal and starts him the 2 QB's we have are gone and they should leave. I don't see Hype doing that to them. He has loyalty to QB's.
