Crowe seems to have amazing range playing diverse characters, probably his biggest sell point as an actor.
On the other hand, I hear he's also a huge jerk- starts bar fights, swears/threatens people often.
That's because of the source material. The tragic story of somebody like Jake LaMotta is inherently more interesting than a guy like James Braddock, a natural good guy. Seems fitting, though, considering Scorsese made RB, while Ron Howard did Cinderella Man.It doesn't quite reach Raging Bull levels IMO, but it certainly didn't get the pub or nominations it deserved.

Still, if Cinderella Man had gotten the pub and awards that it deserved, it would be remebered now, even 25 years down the road as one of the top 3 all-time boxing films.
It's the climate of Hollywood now. A film from a guy like Scorsese in true form would never fly in the modern box office. Only his more violent and shocking films, like Gangs of New York and The Departed enjoy real financial success, which is all that matters now. A movie is only getting made if it will make a buck.
Obviously I don't know they guy, but some people seem to confuse being straightforward with being a jerk. I doubt he just walks up to people in bars and randomly starts hitting them, I am guessing though.
