Chuck Webb Question.........

I do think most people who watched a decent amount of footage of both would pick Webb as the best. Also, take a look at some of the stats Webb had, an unheard of 250 yards vs. a really good Arkansas team in the 1990 Cotton bowl and 293 yards against and pretty good Mississippi team in 1989 and it backs up the statement that he was the best. Those stats don't "ripen with age."

There's a big difference between 'most' and 99% as the later represents the household market penetration for toilet tissue in the US.

No list of Tennessee Greats can be complete without Hank Lauricella!

I believe that Doug Atkins was probably the greatest lineman to ever put on the Orange and White. Other linemen that need recognition are Bob Johnson and Chip Kell.

Way to follow up my excellent, fact based post with something really wierd. :good!: WTF does that mean?

That 1% of the US households do not buy toilet paper. That's the same percentage that you and Truefan are arguing would choose Jamal over Chuck.

Sounds wrong, doesn't it?

Btw... I have no evidence, but suspect most of that 1% not buying toilet paper lives in Alabama.

What are you saying "no" to?

Perhaps the question posed by the thread. All the no's should add up to something less than 1% according to TrueFan and assuming VN is a representative sample of whatever population to which he seeks to generalize his finding (UT fans?).

Jamal and Webb had different running styles.

Webb had better juke moves, but Jamal could run through most of the would-be tacklers that Webb juked. Jamal is/was a much, much more powerful runner.

There's no way 99% of any population that saw both RB's would choose Webb over Lewis. I think your memory of Webb has ripened with age.

i have the videos, so there is no ripening with age. webb could break tackles as well as juke and cut back. i like lewis but webb was better.

To me, it's more about the awesome power running ability of Jamal that he used (uses) to break through the front 7 combined with great acceleration for such a big back that makes him superhuman.

I'm not so sure Webb would break as many tackles against what is now bigger, faster, and stronger front 7's.

It's always hard to compare across decades especially with the way defenses have improved.

The only problem is the question isn't who was the best RB at UT.

I am the one who said 99% and if you want to continue to argue the exact % feel free to do so, because you might be right, it could be as low as 97%.

:)

Webb never had to break as many tackles as Lewis did. He made better cuts and used blocks better. Lewis may have had a little more power but Webb was a more complete back.

No

I agree with all those who say he was best RB. Though I was like 11 years old when he was playing. It was tragic we didn't get to see him play more.

Is the question who should have been the best? Chuck was great but did not play long enough to be the best.

That's okay... I'll take the 2% with the smiley for my day's efforts and give you this in return. :p
