Chuck Smith

Agreed. Hard to be mad at any former player for leaving or not wanting to come coach for the last two head coaches. Let’s hope this last hire works out.

Seems I recall him as a solid DE, did pretty well against the run. Nice to see him active and contributing .

Chuck Smith and Chris Mims were my favorite DE tandem. It was sure fun watching them make Tommy Maddox run for his life in that 1991 UCLA game among many others.

He was always a true vol. Maybe just a poor coach. At least that was according to Dooley

Dooley may have said that but but I'm pretty sure Smith made a career of coaching NFL D linemen how to be a pass rusher. While I know that Jacques Smith is considered a bust by most of us, his best year was his Freshman year when Chuck coached him.

His time with the Vols is the only time he has been responsible for a group of linemen. It may be that he's just very good at teaching technique not so good at putting it together. I also seem to remember that part of chuck Smith's problem was that he did not get along with Wilcox and Company

Didn’t him and Wilcox have an altercation? Seems like he allegedly slapped Wilcox during and argument or something.

Ha...maybe he was swinging for Dooley and missed. Think you are right tho. That rumor was out there.
